Position Summary:
Primary responsibility of the EEG Technician is to perform Electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings of patients to provide input on medical conditions.
This position travels to Newburgh, NY and Monroe, NY.
Primary Responsibilities:
Call patients to verify appointment for EMG and EEG studiesSchedule EMG and EEG patients when neededReschedule patients as needed to maintain EMG and EEG scheduleAttends and participates in departmental meetingsProvide and collect patient satisfaction questionnaire for EMG and EEG patientsThe Technologist provides a safe recording environment by:verifying identity of patientcleaning electrodes after each procedurefollowing universal precautions for Infection Controlattending to patient needs appropriatelyrecognizing/responding to life-threatening situationsbeing certified to perform CPRcomplying with lab protocols for emergency and disaster situationscomplying with hazardous material handling proceduresmaintaining instrument/equipment in good working ordertaking appropriate precautions to ensure electrical safetyThe Technologist establishes rapport with the patient and patient's family by:using personal communication skills to achieve patient relaxation/cooperationexplaining all test procedures, including activation proceduresexplaining the electrode application method (paste, collodion, etc)interacting on a level appropriate to patient's contraindicatedaccommodate for disabilities or special needsdocument unusual or inappropriate behavior suggestive of seizure/pseudo seizureThe Technologist prepares a basic data sheet ("Tech sheet") that includes:patient information (name, age, ID number, doctor, etc.)recording time, date, and Technologist's name or initialsnoting pertinent patient history and familial medical historylisting current medications/sedation and time of last dosagenoting time, date, aura, and circumstances of last seizure or symptomsspecifying the patient's mental, behavioral, and consciousness statesThe Technologist's electrode application follows a method that includes:measuring and marking the head following the 10/20 measurement systemprepping patient's scalp prior to electrode applicationapplying electrodes with paste or with collodion and electrolyteverifying electrode impedances are balanced and below 5,000 OhmsThe Technologist documents the working condition of a digital EEG instrument by:calibrating system amplifiersimputing a biological (bio-cal) signal to all channelscorrects or reports deviations as appropriateThe Technologist obtains a standard EEG that includes:at least 20 minutes of technically acceptable recording (120 pages)eye opening and closing to check effects of stimuli on EEGhyperventilation for a minimum of 3 minutesphotic stimulation at frequencies appropriate for history & reactivitymental stimulatio0ssessment proceduresperiodic checks of electrode impedancenatural drowsiness and sleep, if possibleannotations are done every 2 minutesnotes on observed behavior, clinical seizure manifestations, etc.The Technologist maintain and assess proper cleaning and equipment functioning Equipment cleaned after every useCables are ready for usage, stocked in and a need mannerAmbulatory equipment cleaned after returned, no paste, dirt or visibly soiledMaintain room cleaned and in an orderly fashion before patient arrivesMaintain clean and dust free headbox and computers in the roomThe Technologist differentiates artifacts from cerebral waveforms by:monitoring ECG rhythms for abnormalityrecognizing possible artefactual waveformsdocumenting (on the recording) patient movementsapplying/recording leads for ECGreplacing electrodes exhibiting questionable activity or contacttroubleshooting for possible electrical interferenceWhen the EEG recording is finished the Technologist:removes electrode paste/glue from the patient's scalp and hair after runtine in lab EEGsdescribes clinically significant behaviorThe Technologist understands (has a working knowledge of):medical terminology and accepted abbreviationssigns, symptoms, and EEG correlates for adult neurological disorderssigns, symptoms, and EEG correlates for pediatric neurological disordersseizure manifestations, and EEG correlatesThe Technologist maintains and improves knowledge and skills by:reviewing EEG tracings with team leader on a regular basisreading journal articlesstudying text books related to the fieldThe EEG Technologist applies the principles of electronics and mathematics to recording by:knowing how differential amplifiers workunderstanding Required Qualification:
Current BLS Healthcare Provider Certification1+ years of clinical experience, working in direct patient care
Preferred Qualifications:
EEG or EMG certification1+ years of EEG/EMG experience
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to assist patients on and / or off stretchers, tables, and wheelchairsMust be able to sit for extended periods of time when processing specimensMust be able to walk, stand and sit for long hours
Working Environment:

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The hourly pay for this role will range from $20.00 to $35.72 per hour based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
