We are located at Gothenburg & Bangalore, and we have close cooperation with the sites in Greensboro and Lyon.

Join the Thermal Management Sub Stream, within the Vehicle Motion and Thermal Management department. Embark on the journey to develop the future Volvo Group Thermal Management systems and functions.

What you will do

We are seeking a highly skilled EE Systems Engineer with specialization in automotive diagnostics to architect, implement, and validate diagnostic strategies across vehicle systems. This role is crucial in ensuring early detection, traceability, and reliable fault management across the entire vehicle, subsystems, and individual components. The ideal candidate combines system-level thinking with hands-on expertise in diagnostic protocols, embedded communication, and test processes throughout the development lifecycle — including alpha and beta testing phases.

Key Responsibilities:

Understand the EE architecture roadmap and how it relates to the product roadmap for the assigned area Support the product owners & product managers in clarifying and breaking down the epics/capabilities Lead exploration of alternative solutions through feasibility studies, proof of concept and concept investigations

Diagnostics Strategy & Architecture:

Main responsibility is within component and subsystem and to be able to support the development of a layered diagnostic architecture encompassing: Vehicle-Level Diagnostics: Cross-domain fault correlation, central gateway DTC aggregation, UDS session management, global reset strategies. Subsystem-Level Diagnostics: Domain-specific logic (e.g., powertrain, ADAS, body), subsystem-level health states, isolation of interdependent fault causes. Component-Level Diagnostics: Sensor/actuator self-tests, signal plausibility checks, local fault memory, in-field service triggers. Design failure response strategies including: Degraded mode activation, fail-safe handling, and fallback logic Warning strategies (e.g., MIL, cluster messages, HMI alerts) Triggered actions like network wakeup, logging, or watchdog reset Support diagnostic data modeling using ODX/OTX, and configure DTC thresholds, monitoring conditions, and healing counters.

Alpha & Beta Testing:

Participate in alpha testing to verify diagnostic strategies in prototype builds or HiL/simulation environments. Validate signal integrity, basic communication, and baseline DTC logging. Identify system integration issues before broader vehicle testing. Support beta testing in pre-production vehicles: Monitor real-world fault detection, data logging, and recovery performance. Analyze field trial data for false positives/negatives and fault predictability. Refine thresholds and response strategies based on environmental and usage variability.

Diagnostics Implementation & Tools:

Understand AUTOSAR modules: Diagnostic Communication Manager (DCM). Collaborate across HW/SW teams to implement UDS services (0x10, 0x22, 0x31, etc.) and configure seed/key security access. Work with CAN, LIN, CAN-FD, and Ethernet-based diagnostics. Use tools such as Vector CANoe, CANalyzer, ETAS INCA, and ODX authoring environments for validation and analysis.

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

Align with system architects and safety engineers to define diagnostic coverage aligned with ISO 26262 and cybersecurity requirements (ISO/SAE 21434).

Interface with aftersales and service tool developers to ensure serviceability and effective DTC interpretation.

Who are you?

We believe you are a curious, methodical engineer in the automotive industry. You are open-minded and enjoy teamwork. You are good at networking with other people; you like challenges and understand the value of having fun together at work.

In order to be successful in this role, we believe you have the following background and qualification:

Bachelor’s or Master’s in Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related field. Deep understanding of diagnostic protocols (UDS, OBD-II, ISO 15765) and vehicle communication networks (CAN, LIN, CAN-FD). Experience designing failure response strategies across component, subsystem, and vehicle levels. Familiarity with diagnostic stack in AUTOSAR (Classic Platform). Understanding of alpha/beta test strategies for early-phase and near-production validation. Proficient with diagnostic and test tools (Vector, ETAS, etc.) and scripting (Python, CAPL). Excellent communication, networking and presentation skills Experience with ODX/OTX data modeling, diagnostic testers, and flashing tools. Exposure to functional safety (ISO 26262) and vehicle cybersecurity (ISO/SAE 21434). Experience with cloud-based or edge diagnostics, OTA updates, or predictive maintenance. Ready for the next move?

You have the opportunity to use your open mind and can-do attitude to help us steer our transportation solutions toward a more sustainable tomorrow. Come, join us as we take our solutions into a new era and make modern life possible. Let's drive progress together.
