Job Summary
Drafter will be responsible for creating and updating drawings for mechanical, electrical, and some civil assets, addressing issues with outdated, non-standard, or missing drawings. The drafter will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to design and implement a drawing system to align with the business needs. This role will contribute to establishing drawing standards, work with maintenance crews on parts and project drafting, assist in designing new projects, update drawings for facility upgrades, control drawings by reviewing and managing submissions from vendors or contractors, assist with drawing requests for procurement, and identify and regularly maintain a set of critical drawings to ensure they remain current and accurate.
Key Responsibilities
Drawing System Development:
Collaborate with engineers, maintenance, and operations teams to design and implement a centralized drawing management system to organize and store all facility drawings, including those from vendors and contractors.Contribute to establishing standardized formats, naming conventions, and documentation protocols for mechanical, electrical, and civil drawings.Assist in converting existing drawings (paper or digital) into modern, accessible digital formats using CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Inventor).Drawing Creation and Updates:
Create accurate 2D mechanical and electrical (e.g., plans, elevations, sections, schematics, P&IDs) for equipment, systems, and infrastructure, incorporating precise tolerances using GD&T principles.Update outdated or non-standard drawings to reflect current equipment configurations, facility upgrades, or as-built conditions, ensuring practical designs for fabrication or construction.Potentially some Inventor 3D-Model development from point cloud or from field measurement of targeted work areaGenerate new drawings for missing documentation, including reverse-engineering from existing equipment or parts, with accurate scaling, annotations, and bills of materials (BOM).Perform field measurements to ensure drawing accuracy and revise drawings based on feedback or design changes.Drawing Control:
Review and verify drawings submitted by vendors or contractors for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with facility standards.Ensure external drawings align with internal formats and integrate seamlessly into the centralized drawing management system.Coordinate with vendors and contractors to resolve discrepancies or request revisions, identifying design conflicts or constructability issues.Support for New Projects:
Assist in the design and drafting of new projects, including equipment installations, process line expansions, or facility upgrades, producing detailed drawings (e.g., machinery components, wiring diagrams, or site plans) that align with project specifications.Collaborate with engineering teams to create visualizations for presentations using tools like AutoCAD or Inventor.Provide technical drawings for fabrication, installation, or integration of new equipment, ensuring clarity for manufacturing or construction processes.Drawing Updates for Facility Modifications:
Revise drawings to reflect updates to existing equipment, systems, or infrastructure due to maintenance, retrofitting, or process improvements, incorporating field measurements and as-built documentation.Ensure drawings accurately represent current conditions after facility upgrades or modifications.Conduct field inspections to verify changes and incorporate them into updated drawings.Collaboration with Maintenance Teams:
Work with maintenance crews to draft custom parts, components, or modifications for repairs and upgrades, ensuring drawings are practical for fabrication or assembly.Support maintenance projects by providing detailed technical drawings for fabrication, installation, or retrofitting.Perform field measurements to ensure drawing accuracy for maintenance and project needs.Procurement Support:
Assist with drawing requests for procurement, ensuring accurate technical drawings and BOMs are provided to support purchasing processes for equipment, parts, or materials.Drawing Maintenance and Currency:
Flag and regularly maintain a set of drawings identified for periodic updates or checks to ensure they remain current and accurate.Schedule and perform regular reviews of critical drawings to verify alignment with current equipment and facility conditions.Quality and Compliance:
Ensure all drawings, including those from vendors or contractors, meet industry standards (e.g., ASME Y14.5 for GD&T, ANSI electrical symbols, AIA CAD Layer Guidelines) and comply with internal quality and safety requirements.Conduct quality checks to verify drawing accuracy, completeness, and compliance with project requirements.Maintain version control and audit trails for all drawings to ensure traceability and accuracy.Coordinate with engineering and operations teams to align drawings with safety and regulatory standards.Documentation and Training:
Document processes for drawing creation, storage, retrieval, and vendor drawing integration to ensure long-term usability.Train maintenance and engineering staff on accessing and using the drawing system, clearly explaining technical details to non-technical team members.Qualifications
Education:
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Drafting, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or related field.Experience:
Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in technical drafting, preferably in a manufacturing or industrial environment.Experience with mechanical, electrical, and some civil drafting, including familiarity with industrial equipment (e.g., rollers, conveyors, acid tanks, ovens)Experience reviewing or managing vendor/contractor drawings is highly desirable.Experience supporting new project design, updating drawings for facility modifications, or contributing to drawing systems is preferred.Practical experience with field measurements, as-built documentation, or real-world construction/manufacturing processes is a plus.Technical Skills:
Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Inventor) for 2D and 3D drafting, including 3D modeling and visualization.Knowledge of drawing standards (e.g., ASME Y14.5 for GD&T, ANSI electrical symbols, AIA CAD Layer Guidelines, National CAD Standard).Ability to apply GD&T principles, create schematics (e.g., electrical, P&ID), and generate BOMs.Familiarity with document management systems (e.g., PDM, PLM ) for drawing organization and file management.Ability to perform measurements, scaling, and basic calculations (e.g., dimensions, areas, material quantities).Ability to review and verify technical drawings for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with specifications.Soft Skills:
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills to manage complex drawing libraries, vendor submissions, and project deadlines.Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work with cross-functional teams, vendors, contractors, and non-technical stakeholders.Problem-solving ability to interpret complex designs, identify design conflicts, and address discrepancies in drawings or field conditions.Adaptability to adjust to new project requirements, software updates, or client preferences.Time management skills to balance speed and accuracy under tight deadlines.Physical Requirements:
Ability to perform field measurements and inspections in an industrial environment, including working around heavy machinery and in confined spaces.Ability to climb ladders and multiple-level stairsPreferred Qualifications
Experience in the metal processing industry (e.g., steel or aluminum coating, or rolling).Familiarity with integrating CAD systems with enterprise resource planning (ERP) or maintenance management software.Knowledge of electrical schematics, P&ID (Piping and Instrumentation Diagram) drafting, or civil drafting (e.g., site plans, grading plans).Experience with project-specific drafting for equipment installations or facility expansions.Salary Range: This position's estimated hourly rate of pay is $40.00 - $46.00. Actual base rate of pay will be dependent on an individual’s skills, qualifications, and experience.
