New Porgera Limited (NPL) is a company incorporated in Papua New Guinea and owns the Porgera Gold Mine in Enga Province. The Porgera Gold Mine will employ nearly 3,000 Papua New Guineans at full production, and over the last 30 years of life of the mine it has contributed approximately 10% of Papua New Guinea’s total annual exports. 

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Doctor (Medical Officer) to join our Porgera based operation supporting the Senior Doctor and Medical team, providing frontline and preventative medical services for NPL employees, their families and contractors in our active mining environment.   Primary functions within the role include supporting clinical care, health risk analysis, and emergency response to maintain health compliance and worker safety in remote operational areas

This is a pivotal ‘hands on’ role providing expert onsite clinical assessments and medical treatment that contains both proactive and reactive elements, addressing occupational illnesses, injuries, and general health concerns alongside participating in workplace hazard and exposure assessments, providing medical insight to support risk management strategies, supporting ongoing occupational health surveillance and monitoring programs, identifying early signs of work-related health conditions in partnership with our safety and hygiene teams to mitigate health risks associated with NPL operations.

Reactively you will be required to respond promptly to medical emergencies onsite, delivering critical care and coordinating medical transfers including liaising with external healthcare specialists and facilities providing referrals and specialist treatment as appropriate.

The role also looks at longer term wellbeing and health programs including health education sessions to employees, emphasizing prevention and awareness of mining-related health risks and advise on managing conditions to support safe and productive work environments minimising downtime and assisting efficiency.

You will be part of an operationally focused team that ensures consistent and reliable medical support (including maintaining appropriate, accurate and compliant records) partnering with stakeholders, communicate clearly about priorities and processes, balancing operational requirements with compliance to deliver fit for purpose, pragmatic solutions, seeking to further improve our working practices, use of vendors and ongoing upskilling of our local and national team.

You will model safety behaviours and coach and develop your team, working with your team to assess and manage risk.  NPL operates in a complex environment that requires the successful applicant to be a self-starter, with strong ability in delivery to support the mines successful operation whilst coordinating the efforts of your team members to complete projects according to plan in a timely and safe manner.

To succeed in this role, you must hold a Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent) recognized in Papua New Guinea

combined with an Authority to Practice registration from the PNG Medical Board. Post Graduation qualification or experience in Emergency Medicine is essential alongside Certification in Advanced Life Support (ALS), Basic Life Support (BLS), Emergency Response and a valid driver’s license.  Postgraduate experience or qualifications in Occupational Health would be highly desirable.
