Distributed Systems Engineer, Storage
About the Team

The Storage teams build and operate online stateful systems and abstractions that are reliable, efficient, secure and easy to use for DoorDash Engineering. The teams are responsible for understanding Product Engineering’s evolving needs and developing platform and infrastructure capabilities to serve them. The team currently supports CockroachDB, Cassandra, Kafka, Redis and Amazon Aurora as well as data abstraction services to reduce the complexity of interacting with storage systems for Product Engineers.

About the Role

The Storage team is building and operating a high performance, scalable, reliable data abstraction layer that optimizes reliability and efficiency. You will help us bootstrap and scale our internal distributed database infrastructure centered around Cassandra, with a focus on reliability, operability, security and efficiency. This infrastructure will be the backbone of a platform that strives to manage itself and disappear in the background, enabling engineers to focus on building product experiences our customers love. You must be located in San Francisco, Sunnyvale, Seattle, or the New York Metro Area for this hybrid position. You will report into the Engineering Manager on our Storage team within the Core Infrastructure Organization. You will have the opportunity to contribute to open-source projects like Apache Cassandra, improving the ecosystem for its community.

You’re excited about this opportunity because you will… Help bootstrap internal database infrastructure from the ground up, unlocking new platform capabilities for DoorDash engineers. Build self-managing Cassandra infrastructure that enables high throughput and operational transparency. Collaborate with open-source communities to upstream improvements and innovate within the Cassandra ecosystem. Drive innovation in storage architecture by identifying and addressing scalability and efficiency challenges in distributed systems. Collaborate with teams across infrastructure to evolve capabilities whilst maintaining platform stability. Have the chance to troubleshoot, debug and learn from interesting production problems at multiple layers of the infrastructure stack. We’re excited about you because… You have 5+ years of experience in designing, building and maintaining scalable, distributed data infrastructure. You have deep expertise in NoSQL databases (Cassandra, DynamoDB, or similar). You have contributed to or are interested in contributing to open-source distributed database projects. You have experience managing large fleets of database clusters, including building tools, monitoring, capacity planning, backups and disaster recovery strategies. You have a strong understanding of JVM internals including memory management and concurrency. You thrive in a fast-paced, execution-driven environment and have a proven track record of delivering impactful storage solutions.
