Director Surgical Services

The Director has the responsibility to design, implement, manage, and promote the clinical organization of those nursing and non-nursing activities necessary to attain the goals of the Surgical Services Department. These activities include patient care delivery, program development, collaborative practice and financial planning. Patient population includes newborns, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics. This position is responsible for effective collaboration and working relationships with hospital staff, Chief of Anesthesia, and the Chief of Surgery. The Director supervises the Surgical Services Nurse Managers, Nurse Educator, and Manager Sterile Processing.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT(S):
+ Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or college/university
+ Current New York State license to practice as a Registered Nurse.
+ A B.S. degree in health-related field is required and Master’s degree in related field is preferred.
+ A minimum of five (5) years experience in progressive clinical and management responsibilities in a Surgical Services Department is required.
+ Must have knowledge of the latest development in surgery and surgery techniques.
+ Experience in computerized surgery systems and advance degree desirable.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION:
+ Director of Surgical Services provides leadership to staff to achieve departmental and hospital goals.
+ Facilitates collaborative problem solving and continuous quality improvements.
+ Provides supervisory guidance to staff to promote an effective and efficient department operation.
+ Partners with physician leaders to ensure effective efficiencies and positive working relationships.
+ Develops trust and expectations that resulted in improved communications and behaviors. 

+ Evaluates protocols, practices, and creates strategies for further improvement.
+ Provides guidance, support, and constructive feedback to perioperative personnel team members and other team members as appropriate.
+ Evaluates first case start time improvement through better patient preparation in the pre-op area (Preoperative focus).
+ Champions patient safety improvements by improved processes with an Intraoperative focus such as surgical counts.
+ Oversees department operation to ensure compliance with hospital policies and regulatory requirements.
+ Manages departmental operations in a financially sound manner.
+ Monitors department financial conditions and develops strategies to maintain operations within budgeted levels.
+ Prepares department budget and other financial reports as required.
+ The Director acts as a liaison between responsible department and other departments, administration, and relevant outside agencies.
+ Keeps hospital administrative and other relevant personnel informed of significant departmental issues as appropriate.
+ Organizes, plans, forecasts department needs in conjunction with hospital goals. Develops strategies to accomplish objectives.
+ Continues to maintain an adequate level of professional knowledge to competently manage departmental operations.
+ Adheres to the policies and procedures as outlined in the Exposure Control Manual regarding, universal precautions, bloodborne pathogen, disposal of needles syringes and sharps, cleanup procedures for blood and body fluid spills, storage, handling and disposal of medical waste.
+ Adheres to hospital policies and procedures related to mandatory education, annual health assessment and licensure verification.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
+ Should be able to push/pull, lift/move 35 lb., be able to perform moderately difficult manual manipulations such as using a keyboard, writing, and filing for extended periods of time, must be able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as data entry, typing and using photo copiers. Mobility requirements may include the ability to be stationary at a workstation for a prolonged period time in addition to being able to squat or be mobile for a reasonable length of time and distance. Communication requirements include the ability to comprehend the spoken English language in addition to being able to communicate and read the English language.

Salary Range: $54.01-$70.21/hour Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
