Role and Responsibilities
The Director of R&D Project Management will work with senior management across all US carrier teams and Samsung’s R&D teams to perform strategic analysis for emerging new Mobile technologies such as: 5G, Satellite, IoT, eSIM, Displays, Wireless charging, on-device AI etc. They will provide and study insights from US market/technology trends that will help drive growth in Samsung’s Mobile business. A part of this includes understanding the individual US carrier roadmaps and Samsung Mobile’s roadmap to develop overall technical strategies to drive stronger collaboration with US carriers. Able to champion Samsung strategic initiatives with carriers, carrier ecosystem partners, and Android ecosystem partner Google.
Must be able to do technology sensing with US carriers and partners to identify how Samsung Mobile can align & develop a technical roadmap and product for the carrier business, which could include new features, services, etc.
Collaboration with Samsung’s Technology Strategy Group in Korea to discover technology partnership opportunities with US carriers and ecosystem partners. Present carrier technology trends and R&D strategic direction to internal executive team and customer executive teams. Build working-level relationships with internal R&D, Sales Account and product planning teams.
Roles & Responsibilities:
Sensing US carrier network services, technologies, and the overall telecom industry landscape, by closely working with US Carrier Teams and ecosystem partners.
Maximize future R&D performance by establishing future technology development strategy.
Create analysis report by IT technology theme or product to assist management regarding major R&D decisions.
Enhance R&D synergy and efficiency by promoting inter-company R&D cooperation and collaboration by holding committee meetings and etc.
Key Deliverables:
[Establishment of a short, mid- to long-term technological development roadmap] In order to maximize future business performances, forecast a technology which needs to be developed in a short term (2~3 years) and mid- to long-term (5~10 years) and make an annual plan to develop technologies.
[Discovery of new growth engine for the future] Discover a new growth engine for the future and strengthen the current business competitiveness based on future customers' needs, prospect of economy and market, and forecast about direction of technological development and decide a prospective technological theme in order to discover new business opportunities.
[Technological intelligence] Select the subject of analysis report like key technology and market trend by IT theme, competitor's position and benchmarking, and venture investment trend and write the report.
[Operation of R&D committee] Discover items which can promote cooperation with internal and external R&D organizations and select an agenda to be discussed during the committee meetings, implement follow-up management tasks.
Qualifications
Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering or CS, with an MBA preferred
10+ years of strategic technology planning experience in a high-tech organization
Strong, deep understanding of a broad range of mobile device and network technologies, including knowledge in areas e.g., device and network architecture, LTE, 5G, Satellite, RCS, next generation air interfaces, multimedia services, and network services
Able to synthesize business benefits of technology features and how it relates to revenue or strategic impact to the company
Reporting capabilities in Excel, Power Point and Word
Ability to take complex information, distill down to pertinent information and communicate effectively to both technical and non-technical stake holders
Experience at a Mobile carrier or Mobile OEM highly desirable
Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as presentation skills for all levels of management up to C level
Conflict resolution from the business side & the ability to influence stakeholders
Able to create and build partnership and relationships with internal and external customers
Travel 10% annually (Domestic and Internationally)
Korean fluency a plus
Skills and Qualifications
The salary range for this role is expected to be between $241,500 and $298,500. Actual pay will be determined considering factors such as relevant skills and experience, and comparison to other employees in the role.
