About Austin Sports Commission and its Mission:
The mission of the Austin Sports Commission is to generate economic impact by attracting sporting events and sports-related meetings to the greater Austin area thereby enhancing the quality of life for all residents. The Austin Sports Commission will strive to become a leader and clearinghouse for all youth and amateur sports interests throughout the region.
Summary of Position and Duties:
Prospect for new business through telephone/email solicitation, network through local and national organizations, exhibit at tradeshows, coordinate and participate in concentrated sales efforts in assigned markets, as well as regularly-scheduled outside sales calls and client development. Meeting and exceeding expected hotel room night goals for sports commission department set forth by leadership. Supervise the Sports Sales Manager to ensure success with their goals. Manage the Sports Commission budget and identifying new sources of supplemental funding. Prioritize events by the economic impact, ROI, risk, funding, operational requirements and sustainability for the region. Establish rapport and working relationship with ASC Board of Directors. Assist with marketing and promotional efforts for key sporting events, focusing on regional and national attendance and hotel room night generation. Facilitate a competitive and high-quality bid process for sporting events from inception through booking, event management and engagement of key partners. Maintain a working relationship with local officials to keep city leadership updated on the Commission’s goals and to work collaboratively with them to facilitate Event Trust Fund applications. Continue a strong working relationship with peers in the hotel community, operators at sporting venues, staff at the Convention Center, Palmer Events Center and other large venues. Maintain close relationships with customers by following up quickly on any request, entertaining them in social settings and developing a strong understanding of their programs and their needs. Partner with professional sports franchises, key colleges and universities in the region as well as stadiums, fields, arenas and venues to develop a strategy to achieve the Commission’s goals. Have a good understanding of all policies and procedures of Visit Austin/Austin Sports Commission and follow them as appropriate. Complete all special projects as assigned by the President/CEO, EVP or Vice President of Sales. Key Qualifications and Skill Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Tourism, Hospitality, Sports Marketing or related field. Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years experience in a DMO Sports Commission or the sports marketing/event industry. Must have established relationships within the sports community, strong knowledge of the sports market travel industry and the City of Austin. Must possess excellent customer service and oral and written communication skills, prospecting abilities and computer competency. Experience working with a Board of Directors. Involvement with planning and hosting major sporting events. Proven goal driven results and track record fundraising/soliciting sponsorships. Self-motivation, attention to detail and follow-up are critical personal characteristics. Problem solving through solutions-based thinking. Always present yourself in a mature, professional manner when at work or at functions representing Visit Austin and the Austin Sports Commission. Must live in Austin area or be willing to move to Austin area.
