Based in Hartford, CT, this position supports the Office of the Chief Underwriting Officer’s mission to drive underwriting excellence across the Personal, Commercial and Specialty businesses at The Hartford. This role is responsible for researching, cataloging and communicating emerging risks that have the potential to impact the insurance industry and The Hartford’s portfolio. This role will educate the underwriting community on emerging risks and the potential impact to their businesses. This role will provide technical expertise and help develop underwriting strategies and positions to address emerging risks. In addition, this role will partner with Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) to identify and key underwriting risks and mitigation strategies for risk that have the potential to materially impact The Hartford. Accordingly, the successful candidate will need to demonstrate deep underwriting, product, and claims knowledge, exemplary communication skills and the ability to engage with Senior Management across the company.
WORK ARRANGEMENTS: This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in an office (Hartford, CT) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Research potential emerging risks (examples include accelerated climate change, autonomous vehicles, marijuana legalization) and assess how those risks may impact our insurance products from a claims or regulatory standpointSummarize and communicate emerging risks to key stakeholders across the enterpriseManage emerging risk governance process and facilitate bi-annual meetings of the enterprise Insurance Risk Council (IRC)Identify opportunities and support efforts to develop consistent underwriting positions to address emerging risksContribute content and support to the Underwriting Risk CommitteeContribute to additional OCUO underwriting and product initiativesQUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum of 7 years of experience in Underwriting, Claims, Product Management or comparable role is required; CPCU or similar designation a plusSolid understanding of core P&C lines of businessKeen interest in emerging insurance issues and demonstrated ability to draw connections between existing business strategies and evolving threats and opportunities Solid understanding of underwriting & claims processes, including underwriting guidelines, underwriting authority, coverage, claims operations, etc; legal experience a plusStrong analytical & critical thinking skills; solution-oriented mindset with the ability to engage in new ways of looking at problems, processes and solutionsStrong written and verbal communication skills; good comfort level in developing and delivering presentations to business leadersStrong interpersonal and relationship management skills; ability to interact and collaborate with a broad array of business and functional area colleagues to solve business problems Experience building and maintaining strong relationships both internally and externallyBachelor’s degree strongly preferredCompensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
