Position Summary

The Director of Accounting is the senior accounting lead responsible for ensuring the financial integrity of the general ledger and legal entity financials across North American Retail Insurance, a major business vertical. This leader provides oversight and governance of accounting outcomes, while partnering with Shared Services, Global Reconciliation, and Corporate Accounting to ensure execution of accurate and timely accounting operations and financial reporting for their respective vertical.

This role is accountable for financial reporting accuracy, reconciliation compliance, internal control adherence, and alignment with accounting policy. Additionally, the role serves as a strategic partner to business leadership and FP&A—connecting financial results to operational drivers and enabling well-informed decisions. This leader will manage a team responsible for the oversight of the full accounting reporting process, ensuring financial integrity and compliance across the business segment.

Key Responsibilities

General Ledger Oversight & Financial Accuracy

Own financial statement accuracy across legal entities in the vertical; ensure reported results are complete, consistent, and compliant with US GAAP and internal policy.

Review and challenge monthly financial results, journal entries, and reconciliations produced by Shared Services and Global Reconciliation teams.

Partner with Corporate Accounting to monitor close status, address escalations, and resolve exceptions or material misstatements.

Ensure appropriate ownership of P&L and balance sheet accounts across the vertical, including intercompany and reclasses.

Oversee the end-to-end accounting reporting process, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with regulatory requirements.

Reconciliation & Control Governance

Maintain accountability for reconciliation quality, timeliness, and issue resolution across the segment.

Work with cross-functional teams to ensure internal controls (e.g., SOX) are executed and evidenced properly for all vertical entities.

Support internal and external audit requests, providing vertical-level context and control environment validation.

Business Partnership & Financial Stewardship

Serve as the primary accounting contact for vertical FP&A leaders and business operators.

Translate financial results into business insight; support FP&A with variance explanations and alignment on forecasting inputs.

Partner with cross-functional teams (e.g., Tax, Treasury, Legal, Technical Accounting) on strategic initiatives, reorganizations, or M&A integrations impacting the vertical.

Strategic Enablement & Continuous Improvement

Provide feedback to Integrations and Shared Services on performance, process improvements, and policy application.

Collaborate with Corporate Controllership to standardize accounting processes and reporting outputs across entities.

Support finance transformation initiatives, including ERP improvements, data quality efforts, and reporting enhancements.

Lead and mentor a team of accounting professionals, providing guidance and support to ensure high performance and professional development.

Qualifications/Required:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA required.

10+ years of progressive experience in controllership, financial reporting, or accounting operations roles.

Demonstrated ability to manage general ledger oversight and reconciliation compliance in a shared services or matrixed environment.

Strong knowledge of US GAAP, financial close processes, and internal control frameworks (e.g., SOX).

Exceptional communication and leadership skills, especially in influencing cross-functional teams without direct authority.

Preferred:

Proven experience in managing and developing high-performing accounting teams.

Extensive experience in overseeing the full accounting reporting process for a business segment.

Experience in fintech, insurance, or private equity-backed organizations.
