Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit The purpose of the International Programs Center (IPC) is to coordinate, develop, and nurture the University’s international activities and to ensure that the University achieves its international goals as stated in its Strategic Plans. Specific activities include: developing and managing the Study Abroad and Exchanges programs; managing the faculty-led programs; recruitment, admission, and retention of international students; providing support services including immigration and practical training placement for international (F1) and exchange students (J1) and visiting scholars; securing funding for international-related projects for the faculty, departments and university; developing and managing outreach programs to the local schools, businesses and community. IPC serves as the liaison for the Interlink Language Programs and oversees the work of a position that supports international efforts for the UNC System institutions. Position Summary Specific activities include: developing and managing education abroad programs; oversight of faculty-led programs; securing funding for international-related projects for the faculty, departments and university; developing and managing outreach programs to local schools, businesses and community.
The Director is responsible for providing our diverse student body with access to global engagement opportunities through the full-cycle management and administration of all education abroad programs (including faculty-led, virtual programs, research abroad, and global internships) for 450+ students. The oversight of education abroad will require providing direct service, management and supporting the development of policy as it relates to comprehensive internationalization, crisis management, program development, financial management, office administration, student advising and student health and safety.
The Director provides direct support and leadership to a full-time staff of one Assistant Director and a Study Abroad Coordinator. They also supervise several student workers.While the Director reports to the Associate Provost, they will also work closely with the Senior Director to administer and expand UNCG’s study abroad and exchange programs. Minimum Qualifications A Bachelor’s degree with an international focus Outstanding intercultural sensitivity. Exemplary written and verbal competency and excellent computer skills Experience working, living, and/or studying abroad Three or more years of related experience, including experience supervising others. The incumbent must be able to relate to students of diverse backgrounds and work effectively with multiple administrative and academic offices. This position requires the ability to develop and interpret policies and procedures of both UNCG and partner institutions and advise stakeholders accordingly. Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates Preferred Qualifications Three to five years of experience working in the education abroad field, preferably in a public higher educational system like UNC, would be advantageous to this position. Communicating implications of data analysis to upper administration. Analyzing international mobility trends and data to support internationalization at UNC Greensboro. Supporting international and domestic visitors from partner institutions and organizations. Working with academic departments to achieve curricular integration of their offerings with education abroad program offerings. Developing and articulating a clear vision and goals for the growth and enhancement of education abroad opportunities at UNC Greensboro. Exhibiting patterns of service to UNC Greensboro and the wider community through participation in appropriate university committees (such as the University-Affiliated International Travel Review Committee, the Study Abroad Committee, and IPC Advisory Committee), as well as professional organizations (such as NAFSA and their state and regional affiliates and other groups).
Percentage Of Time 15% Key Responsibility Crisis management & Student Health and Safety Essential Tasks Responsible for analyzing risks abroad and providing updates and detailed strategies to mitigate risks. Serving in an “on-call” capacity to respond to international emergencies. Collaborating with relevant local and global partners to establish emergency communication protocols to be shared with faculty, staff, and students. Developing policies and procedures for health and safety, risk reduction, and crisis management. Developing, reviewing, and updating relevant forms with legal counsel. Percentage Of Time 30% Key Responsibility Program development and Implementation Essential Tasks The day-to-day management and oversight of all education abroad programs and working closely with the Senior Director and the Associate Provost for International Programs to create a variety of new programs aimed at diversifying education abroad. Operationalizing all activities related to the education abroad programs including recruiting, interviewing, selecting, and providing pre-departure and reentry support for students; supporting the study abroad course; coordinating transfer of credit; supporting incoming exchange students (as needed); as well as developing and administering faculty-led and virtual programs. Coordinating data collection and evaluative procedures to ensure that programs meet the educational and programmatic needs of its participants. Acting as an advocate for international education experiences and serving as the principal liaison with faculty and academic units to integrate international experiences into the curricula. Coordinating data collection and evaluative procedures to ensure that programs meet the educational needs of its participants. Assisting in the development of promotional and informational materials including web pages, social media sites, brochures, handbooks, and videos. Assisting in the development and administration of social and cultural programs and activities for education abroad students. Assisting with agreements and fostering mutually beneficial and ethical relationships with international partners.
