The Job:  

SBD is seeking a dynamic and experienced Director, Sr. Counsel, Labor & Employment to provide strategic and operational legal support for our Mexico-based manufacturing operations and commercial teams. This role will serve as the company’s primary labor and employment legal advisor in Mexico and will play a key role in ensuring compliance with Mexican labor laws, managing employment matters, advising on workforce-related matters, and handling or overseeing confidential investigations. The position will report to a senior leader in the SBD Labor and Employee Relations COE in the United States and collaborate closely with cross-border teams. Depending on the background of candidate, this role may also provide legal support and oversight of outside counsel in South American and Latin American countries where SBD does business.

You will get to:

Serve as the lead legal advisor on all labor and employment matters across manufacturing operations and commercial sites in Mexico.Provide counsel on individual and collective labor issues, including union negotiations, collective bargaining agreements, and labor disputes.Ensure compliance with all applicable Mexican labor laws and regulationsAdvise HR and business leaders on terminations, discipline, hiring, compensation, working conditions, and restructuring.Manage employment matters and administrative proceedings, partnering with outside counsel as necessary.Monitor and advise on legal and regulatory developments impacting the workforce and proactively mitigate risk.Draft, review, and update employment agreements, policies, and workplace rules to align with legal requirements and company values.Support due diligence and integration efforts related to M&A or facility expansion in Mexico.Collaborate with U.S.-based teams to ensure consistency and alignment of global labor and employment strategies and policies.Lead or support internal investigations into employee complaints or misconduct.Provide training to HR and management on employment law topics and best practices.

The Person:

Law degree from an accredited university; admission to practice law in Mexico.10+ years of legal experience, with significant expertise in Mexican labor and employment law.In-house counsel experience preferred, ideally in a manufacturing or industrial company.Experience handling unionized workforces and managing collective labor relationships.Strong understanding of cross-border legal collaboration and international corporate environments.Fluent in Spanish and English (written and spoken).Proven ability to balance risk with business needs and provide practical, solution-oriented guidance.Strong interpersonal, negotiation, and communication skills.Ability to take a practical and balanced approach.Preferred Qualifications:Experience working for a U.S.-based multinational or reporting to U.S. legal or HR leadership.Prior experience supporting multiple manufacturing facilities in Mexico.
