General Statement
The Director of Counseling and Psychological Services ( CAPS ) at Montana State University serves as the campus leader for mental health prevention education, clinical services, and professional clinical training. CAPS is part of an integrated Student Wellness team which includes health education and promotion programs, Campus Recreation, and Student Health Services. The director plays a key leadership role within this team, overseeing counseling center operations and providing campus-wide consultation and support on student mental health concerns.
CAPS is the university on-site mental health clinic and is accredited by the International Accreditation of Counseling Services ( IACS ). Its core functions include clinical services, professional training (the doctoral internship program is accredited by the American Psychological Association), and outreach and prevention. CAPS and Student Health Services work together closely and support an integrated model of care.
Duties and Responsibilities
Student Wellness Counseling and Psychological Services is pleased to announce an opening for the Director position. We are seeking an established mental health clinician with demonstrated excellent clinical skills serving a range of presenting issues within a short-term therapy model. The successful individual will lead a thriving college counseling center with a full-staff of mental health professionals (counselors, social workers, and psychologists) and have excellent leadership and administrative skills. We are seeking an individual who is committed to developing and retaining a well-functioning team, serving as a collaborative leader within the broader Student Wellness area, and prioritizing student success, access, and wellbeing for students from all backgrounds. The director is responsible for all agency functions including budgeting, human resource management, effective clinical care, staying abreast of current trends, quality assurance and subsequent adjustments, and strategic leadership. CAPS is a relationally based team, values strong working relationships, and seeks a Director to continue to support this model.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
+ Doctorate in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an APA accredited program
+ Minimum of 7 years providing direct clinical care as a licensed mental health clinician
+ Experience supervising professional clinical staff as well as doctoral and masters interns
+ Experience working in an integrated health and counseling model
+ Experience working as a leader and administrator in a mental health setting
+ Licensed as a psychologist in MT or the ability to be licensed in the state within 6 months of hire
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
+ Demonstrated leadership working across professional disciplines on committees or specific work groups
+ Demonstrated skills in public speaking and presentations to a wide range of constituents including students, faculty, staff, and community members
+ Experience working in a comprehensive counseling model at a university counseling center
+ Experience with strategic planning and implementation in a mental health counseling setting
+ Demonstrated commitment to ensuring access and services are available to all students

+ Possess the ability to be flexible and respond quickly to urgent needs that arise from the campus community.
+ Demonstrate a high level of integrity as a leader and colleague.
+ Advanced ability to use computer programs (including an electronic health record) to complete job duties and assist in agency functioning.
