Job Description

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Dean, College of Science and Mathematics, the Director, PSEG Institute for Sustainability Studies serves as a dynamic and highly collaborative leader who engages externally with local communities and global organizations. The Director leads all Institute programs and activities while also overseeing the personnel and funding for these activities. As part of increasing the reach of the PSEG ISS as a regional/national center for sustainability, the Director is responsible for helping create research initiatives, major relevant symposia and conferences and developing new educational opportunities in community and corporate settings that highlight innovations in areas such as flood mitigation, drought planning, renewable and clean energy, emissions reductions, food security, and waste management. Externally, the Director actively engages the area's private sector to collaborate on actionable funded projects that address sustainability challenges, linking knowledge to action to promote a balanced transition towards a more fully sustainable environment.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develop and implement a strategic vision that enhances Montclair’s role as a regional and national leader in sustainability research, education, and applied practices.

Cultivate relationships with local, regional, and national organizations to co-create solutions to complex sustainability challenges.

Expand and sustain collaboration and opportunities for student and faculty engagement across academic departments and administrative units to support transdisciplinary approaches to sustainability.

Lead sustainability programs, including the Green Teams, fostering hands-on learning and workforce development in partnership and opportunities with corporations, nonprofits, and government.

Develop initiatives that integrate educational programming and applied research in emerging fields such as urban sustainability, geospatial informatics, climate resilience, the built environment and green infrastructure.

Manage a large portfolio of externally funded educational and applied research projects, including the supervision of project personnel, budgets, compliance and timely reporting to funders.

Identify and pursue new funding opportunities from public and private sources; oversee pitches, proposal development, budget planning, and submission.

Provide subject matter expertise in sustainability to drive innovations and projects toward growth and implementation in real-world scenarios.

Represent the Institute in professional networks and public forums; organize conferences, workshops, and events that elevate the visibility and impact of sustainability efforts.

Ensure efficient management of Institute operations including procurement, hiring, budgeting, and contracts, in coordination with university offices.

Promote a collaborative and inclusive workplace culture that values creativity, accountability, and mutual respect.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

Master’s degree from accredited university in a field related to sustainability sciences.

Minimum five years of professional experience within sustainability.

Demonstrated collaborative leadership in an interdisciplinary program involving complex organizational structures.

Ability to develop and maintain external partnerships.

Strong record of project development and implementation.

Experience with sustainability topics and trends.

Ability to interact effectively with a range of public and private enterprises and work as part of a team.

Excellent written and oral communication skills applicable to diverse audiences.

PREFERRED:

Doctoral degree from an accredited university in a discipline aligned with the Institute.

Two years of professional experience in a leadership role within sustainability.

Experience with higher education administration and processes in procurement, budget management, and scheduling.

Ability to inspire high performance and foster collaboration and trust among team members.

Capacity to thrive in a fast-paced, diverse working environment.

Demonstrated ability to initiate collaborations with colleagues in other executive-level offices and academic units.

Salary Range

$155,000.00-$170,000.00 Annually
