Director, Paint

The Director of Paint at Lucid Motors is a strategic leader responsible for overseeing all aspects of the paint operations within vehicle manufacturing. This role ensures that paint processes and finishes meet the highest standards of quality, efficiency, environmental compliance, and innovation. The Director of Paint will lead a team of managers, engineers, and technicians, collaborating closely with cross-functional partners to deliver world-class vehicle exteriors that embody Lucid’s commitment to excellence. 

Key Responsibilities 

Provide overall leadership and direction for the Paint department, setting strategic goals aligned with Lucid Motors’ vision for vehicle quality and performance.  Develop, implement, and monitor paint operation processes to achieve optimum productivity, yield, and product quality.  Drive continuous improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives within the paint shop, reducing waste, cycle times, and cost while enhancing finish quality.  Ensure compliance with all health, safety, and environmental regulations—including federal and state guidelines for paint chemicals and emissions.  Manage departmental budgets, capital projects, and resource planning to support production growth and technology advancement.  Partner with R&D and Engineering to introduce new colors, materials, and paint technologies, ensuring manufacturability and scalability.  Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, and professional development, mentoring leaders at various levels within the paint organization.  Collaborate cross-functionally with Vehicle Assembly, Quality, Supply Chain, Maintenance, Facilities, and HR to optimize overall plant performance.  Analyze paint defects, root causes, and implement corrective actions to minimize rework and warranty claims.  Maintain industry-leading standards for sustainability, energy use, and environmental stewardship in paint operations.  Represent the Paint function in leadership forums and periodic reviews with the Sr. Director, Vehicle Assembly. 

Qualifications 

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Manufacturing, or related field; advanced degree preferred.  10+ years of experience in automotive paint operations or similar high-volume manufacturing environments, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.  Demonstrated expertise in automotive paint processes, materials, automation, and quality assurance.  Strong understanding of regulatory requirements and environmental best practices related to paint shop operations.  Proven track record of implementing lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, or similar process improvement methodologies.  Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate and develop teams at all levels.  Experience managing large-scale capital projects, budgets, and cross-functional initiatives.  Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, innovative, and mission-driven environment.  Advanced knowledge of new paint technologies, automation, and Industry 4.0 principles.  Experience launching new products or manufacturing lines in the automotive sector.  Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.  Commitment to Lucid Motors’ values of sustainability, innovation, and excellence.    At Lucid, we don’t just welcome diversity - we celebrate it!
