Your New Role…
CNN is hiring a Director of Explainers to lead a team dedicated to creating visually compelling, deeply reported videos that help audiences make sense of the news and the world around them. As the leader of CNN’s Explainers team, this role is ideal for a creative, strategic editorial leader with a strong background in digital video, a passion for storytelling and a proven track record building teams and driving high-impact projects from concept to publication.
Your Role Accountabilities…
Lead and define the editorial strategy, voice and visual identity of CNN Explainers, shaping it into a destination for smart, accessible and engaging video journalism.
Oversee the development and production of explainer videos across a wide range of subjects—including politics, global affairs, science, technology and culture.
Manage a team of producers, editors and designers—guiding story selection, approving scripts and treatment and ensuring editorial excellence and consistency across output.
Collaborate with CNN anchors, correspondents, reporters and subject-matter experts to turn complex reporting into digital-first video formats that serve audience needs across platforms.
Partner with product, audience development and analytics teams to optimize reach, retention and engagement of explainer content.
Stay ahead of digital storytelling trends and identify new formats and technologies that can enhance visual journalism and deepen audience connection.
Set team priorities, manage budgets and resources, and ensure smooth coordination across departments and stakeholders.
Represent the Explainers team within the larger CNN organization, contributing to the evolution of CNN’s global content strategy.
Qualifications & Experience…
10+ years of experience in digital video journalism including at least 5 years in a leadership or management role.
Proven success in developing and overseeing high-performing explainer videos or visually driven journalism (examples required).
Deep editorial judgment and the ability to translate complex news topics into accessible, audience-focused storytelling.
Outstanding writing, scripting and story editing skills, with a strong sense of voice, pacing, and visual narrative.
Experience leading cross-functional teams and managing end-to-end production workflows across both short-turn and long-form video projects.
Familiarity with digital video tools (Adobe Premiere, After Effects, or similar), motion graphics and data visualization techniques.
Exceptional organizational, communication and people management skills.
A passion for journalistic innovation and a deep understanding of CNN’s mission, voice, and digital ambitions.

In compliance with local law, we are disclosing the compensation, or a range thereof, for roles in locations where legally required. Actual salaries will vary based on several factors, including but not limited to external market data, internal equity, location, skill set, experience, and/or performance. Base pay is just one component of Warner Bros. Discovery’s total compensation package for employees. Pay Range: $122,500.00 - $227,500.00 salary per year. Other rewards may include annual bonuses, short- and long-term incentives, and program-specific awards. In addition, Warner Bros. Discovery provides a variety of benefits to employees, including health insurance coverage, an employee wellness program, life and disability insurance, a retirement savings plan, paid holidays and sick time and vacation.
