Job Description

General Summary:    

The Director of Data Platform Engineering will play a pivotal role in leading the technical data delivery at Lurie Children’s Hospital, focusing on leveraging data to drive insights, decision-making, research platforms and improving patient outcomes. Successful candidate will have a strong background in modern data engineering best practices, MPP data architecture and modelling, and data security.

The Director of Data Platform Engineering will lead and mentor a team of data engineers and architects to design, build, and maintain an enterprise data warehouse (EDW) and data marts supporting key hospital functions, including clinical, operational, financial, and administrative domains. This role requires a strategic thinker and hands-on leader to drive data infrastructure projects, ensure high data quality, and enable advanced analytics to improve hospital performance and patient outcomes.

Essential Job Functions:

Strategic Leadership: Execute on the data platform engineering roadmap aligned with Lurie’s strategic objectives. Foster a data-driven culture across the organization. Interface with vendor partners in establishing a state of the art data ecosystem.

Data Architecture and Infrastructure: Design and implement scalable, high performing data pipelines and workflows to support the EDW and data marts.  Oversee the development and optimization of data models for efficient querying and reporting. Ensure data infrastructure aligns with best practices in data security, governance and compliance.

Team Management: Lead and mentor a team of data engineers and architects, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment.  Establish performance goals, provide feedback, and promote professional development. The authority to hire, separate, promote, and demote team members.

Operational Excellence: Ensure high availability and reliability of the data platform through robust monitoring, performance tuning, and disaster recovery planning. Define and enforce data engineering best practices, standards, and methodologies.

Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement: Partner with peers in Product, Clinical, Finance, and Operational teams to identify key metrics and reporting needs. Work closely with these teams to enable data ready for advanced analytics, machine learning, and self-service.

Innovation and Continuous Improvement: Stay updated with emerging technologies and trends in data engineering, cloud computing, and healthcare analytics. Drive the adoption of Modern tools and techniques to enhance the scalability and efficiency of the data platform.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data and Analytics, Mathematics or related field. A Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant field is preferred.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

Epic Cogito Fundamentals, Clarity Data Model, and Caboodle Data Model certifications are strongly preferred.

Years of Experience

8+ years of experience in data engineering, data science, or related roles with at least 3 years in a leadership role.

Computer Skills (i.e. Software/Hardware)

Expertise in modern data engineering, data warehousing, data lakes, and lake house architecture and tools such as Fivetran, DBT, Coalesce, Matillion, ADF, Azure or AWS, DataBricks, Snowflake, Synapse etc...

Broad experience in multiple competency areas of data and analytics delivery including: data governance, data architecture, data integration, data classification, data analysis, data visualization, data quality management, data security and privacy, MDM, data standards, regulatory compliance and enterprise architecture frameworks

Other Skills (i.e. Project Management, Negotiation)

Strong understanding of healthcare data and related privacy and security regulations.

Excellent communication and leadership skills.

Demonstrated ability to build, lead, and develop high-performing teams.

Excellent business acumen and interpersonal skills; able to work across business lines at a senior level to influence and effect change and drive performance improvement to achieve goals.

Demonstrated knowledge in evaluating, planning and implementing various analytics technology platforms, data structures, information systems/tools, related software and data management, enterprise content management.

Familiarity with healthcare information generation, information architecture, algorithm development and analysis methods.

Pay Range

$153,920.00-$253,968.00 Salary

The pay range for this job indicates minimum and maximum targets for the position.
