Key Responsibilities:
The purpose of the Business and Market Development Facilitator role is to directly support the implementation of activities under the Renewable Energy Access for Progress (REAP) Project. These activities include supporting market assessments on both the supply and demand sides, raising awareness and creating demand for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficient Technologies (RE/EET) among target communities, and collaborating with private sector actors (RE/EET suppliers) to develop supply chain business models that expand technology penetration in rural areas.
The role also involves engaging with state-owned enterprises such as ZESCO, statutory institutions such as the Rural Electrification Authority (REA), and regulatory bodies such as compulsory standards organizations. Additionally, the facilitator will support entrepreneurs—particularly women's empowerment groups, farmer groups, youth groups, and local economic centers—to maximize the productive use of RE/EET for income generation and improved livelihoods in target communities.
Major Responsibilities
Market Assessments and Stakeholder Mapping
In collaboration with technical specialists (Renewable Energy and Business & Inclusive Market Systems Development), facilitate comprehensive Renewable Energy and Energy Efficient Technologies market assessments.
Identify high-potential economic centers in target communities suitable for mini-grid installation.
Map and engage relevant stakeholders, including Renewable Energy and Energy Efficient Technologies distributors, service providers, and financial institutions.
Support to Private Sector Actors
Assist private actors in building partnerships with distributors and local champions for the supply and installation of energy-efficient equipment and appliances (e.g., improved cookstoves, solar-powered water pumps, efficient lighting/heating solutions).
Capacity Building
Conduct training for staff, community champions, and end-users on the operation, maintenance, and energy management of Renewable Energy And Energy Efficient Technologies systems.
Train Renewable Energy And Energy Efficient Technologies Champions in community-level promotion of renewable and energy-efficient technologies.
Build the capacity of local value chain market facilitators in using renewable or energy-efficient technologies.
Entrepreneurship Development
Facilitate training for entrepreneur groups (women, farmers, and youth) in areas such as financial literacy, financial management, entrepreneurship, and agribusiness.
Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning
Regularly monitor and evaluate project activities for effectiveness and quality control.
Report on key outcomes and communicate most significant change stories demonstrating the impact of the project on community livelihoods.
Qualifications: Education / Knowledge / Technical Skills and ExperienceBachelor’s degree in Agricultural Sciences (Economics, Agribusiness), Entrepreneurship, or other business-related fields (e.g., Business Management, Administration, Marketing)
Master’s degree is an added advantage
Minimum of 5 years of experience in a related field at management level
Strong experience in value chain development and community-based financing systems is required
Experience working with donor-funded and community-based projects is preferred

Working Environment / ConditionsWork environment: 50% field-based, 50% office-based
Travel: Local travel required; occasional international travel may be necessary
