Job Description

The Design & Systems Engineering Lead will work collaboratively with the Customer across a wide range of project teams providing technical support on Babcock Naval Nuclear assets and facilities within the Devonport Dockyard site. This role may include but is not limited to: being the technical interface with the customer, providing professional and flexible technical accountability to the ongoing operations and development of DRDL facilities and assets, ensuring that all design and systems aspects of facility modifications, redesigns and new infrastructure are scoped, developed and delivered to meet operational requirements, managing customer requirements and compliance obligations, leading a team of Design and Systems Engineers spanning civil, mechanical and other relevant disciplines supporting various Customer projects.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Lead and coordinate a small team of Design and Systems Engineers, providing direction, mentorship and oversight.Liaise with multi-disciplinary teams and stakeholders to align Design and Systems support with broader infrastructure or asset development projects. Support the feasibility, planning, design, construction and verification steps as needed.Providing technical oversight and approval on key Engineering deliverables produced by the Design and Systems team prior to customer submission where appropriate, ensuring technical, regulatory and safety considerations have been addressed.Provide technical input to project scoping, documentation, risk assessments and progress reporting.Engage directly with the customer to understand requirements, provide Civil Engineering and Architectural support and attend Customer meetings.Scope, design and propose modifications to existing assets or new facilities based on customer needs and constraints. Engage in the full lifecycle development of infrastructure projects, from conceptual design through to implementation, supplier management and maintenance.

Work Experience

Qualifications & Experience

Bachelor’s degree (minimum) in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline; Master’s degree or working towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) status preferred.Typically 5+ years of relevant Civil / Systems Engineering experience in a highly regulated industry (e.g., nuclear, maritime, infrastructure, oil and gas etc. ).Knowledge and awareness of large-scale infrastructure development, architecture, dockyard facilities and asset management systems.Proficiency in Civil Design and awareness of Systems Engineering tools and software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, DOORS etc.Proficiency in infrastructure planning, asset lifecycle management and systems engineering methodologies. Experience in the design process and producing evidence of the design and substantiation of complex dockyard infrastructure facilities and assets. 

 

Desirable Attributes:

Good Communication skills - Makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens effectively; clarifies information as needed.Understanding of nuclear industry and/or other safety critical environments. Experience in working in a dockyard, marine, Defence or MoD environments particularly with asset lifecycle support.Experience of large-scale civil infrastructure projects, including dock facilities, utilities and respective safety and regulatory considerations.Knowledge of multi-disciplinary engineering (Civil, Structural, Systems and Design) and integration of mechanical/electrical systems into infrastructure projects.Knowledge of Systems Engineering principles, MBSE and advancement of digitalisation in asset management.
