Job Description

The Washington Post is looking for an accomplished and innovative journalist to serve as deputy editor of the National desk, helping to drive ambitious coverage of the United States and American life.

The deputy editor’s portfolio demands dexterity, organization and a passion for making complex subjects accessible to readers. Our national correspondents illuminate the events, trends and people shaping cities, states and regions across the United States; our breaking news team jumps on major stories ranging from campus protests to mass shootings; and our education beat reporters bring authoritative subject matter expertise to one of the most pressing topics in the country.

The editor who fills this role will be expected to help shape distinctive, original coverage of all of America that deepens our readers' understanding of education, religion, personal freedoms, the American dream, demographics, families, drugs and other vices, guns and urban and rural America.

Responsibilities:

Partner with the National editor to drive daily coverage. Help set ambitious coverage priorities across the staff, seek excellence in story selection and framing, and elevate copy.

Communicate with teams across the newsroom. Identify opportunities for collaboration on consequential story targets and guide them.

Encourage the production of stories that break news or demand attention in other ways, for example through compelling visuals, audio or graphics.

Foster a supportive, empathetic work culture that furthers staff development and sets high expectations for achievement.

Preferred qualifications:

At least 7 years of professional journalism experience.

A track record of editing or reporting with distinction.

A vision for elevating The Post’s National coverage to engage new audiences.

A collaborative spirit and superb communication skills.

Supervisory experience is a big plus.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom. Interested applicants should submit a résumé and a cover letter outlining their vision for the role to our jobs portal. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by May 21 will be prioritized. Cover letters should be addressed to National Editor Jennifer Amur and Managing Editor Peter Spiegel.

The starting salary range for this position is $154,000.00 — $230,200.00 USD. The actual starting salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements. This position may be eligible for a bonus or incentive program, and a member of the Talent Acquisition team will discuss bonus payment terms and conditions during the interview process.

The Washington Post’s policy for employees is five days per week in the office, with exceptions for newsgathering and general business travel.
