The incumbent will be responsible and accountable to the Director of Campus Protection Service (CPS). He / She will be directly responsible for crime prevention and crime combating, management of all events and crowd management in the university precinct and external perimeters. The incumbent will be responsible for managing the safety and security of students, staff, visitors, and assets within his/her area of responsibility. Will be responsible for identifying risks and high crime areas within his/her area of responsibility. He / She will manage deployment of personnel to address crime and university events within area of responsibility and ensure the proper briefing of all personnel under his/her supervision. He /She will liaise with the appropriate Manager in relation to crime / incidents and appropriate measures that will be implemented to address and reduce crime and other related incidents
Brief Description
Responsibilities:
Manage crime prevention and combatting, events, and ensure response to all crime and incidents on Campus through Crime Prevention and Response Team (CPRT) and contracted external security providers when necessary
Ensure crime prevention and combating operations which are medium to high risk are conducted as planned and respond to all crime incidents occurring on campus
Monitor timely response to all reported incidents
Ensure crime awareness campaigns in hotspot areas are conducted
Ensure that all planned and unplanned events are attended to
Ensure all relevant events role players are part of the events planning
Co-chairing events management committee sitting. To liaise with POS, SAPS and JMPD in the event of protest action
Manage external perimeter security through briefing and deployment of personnel together with armed response according to crime and risk analysis
Ensuring adequate deployment of officers on sites and taking responsibility for all the equipment deployed
Ensure the smooth running of the Joint operational Centre (JOC), to ensure that there is 24- hour deployment of operators
Ensure equipment, cameras, monitors and panic buttons are functional
Supervise and ensure constant monitoring of activity using CCTV System to detect/intercept persons engaged in criminal activity and ensure effective follow-up
Ensure that all JOC Officers are adequately trained
Requirements:
Matric and tertiary degree in security management or equivalent (NQF 7) in security management.
PSIRA Grade A / be able to register with PSIRA within three months of employment
Crowd Management Course
Armed Response Course / Tactical Training Course
Preferably 10 years in a security related environment, with at least 5 years in management position with evidence of progressive responsibilities, and preferably within an educational environment
Must be available 24/7
Ability to work weekends and evenings as and when necessary
The candidate must be able to pass background check
Physical demands are in excess of those for deskbound work, and therefore the incumbent would need to be physically fit
Ability to interpret and apply applicable legislation, rules and regulations
Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations
Ability to enforce legislation and policies tactfully and with respect for the rights of others
Ability to communicate effectively, analyse data, prepare records and reports
Ability to work well with diverse groups and provide effective leadership
Understanding of cultural diversity
Experience in the higher education sector is preferred
Membership of SASA and COMPROSA would be advantageous
