Human Resource Contact: Samantha Drew /samantha.drew2@wyo.gov/ 307-777-7667 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed in the job level. + Administrative Operations: The Deputy Director assists in agency contracts, employment decisions, budget and legislative needs, expense authorizations, attorney and legal staff training and management, along with all daily operations for the efficient management of the agency. + Policy and Procedures: Help create and manage the agency's policies and procedures required for a state agency tasked with providing the most important of constitutional mandates. + Ongoing Courtroom Experience / Training:Gain continued courtroom experience in all levels of cases based on agency/jurisdiction need and the opportunity to use that experience to assist in the training of attorneys in various stages of their legal careers. + Client Representation:Defend clients at all stages of criminal proceedings, including arraignments, pre-trial hearings, trials, sentencing, and appeals. + Case Preparation:Conduct legal research, draft motions, and develop defense strategies tailored to each case. + Negotiation & Advocacy:Engage in plea negotiations with prosecutors, ensuring outcomes align with clients’ best interests. + Investigation:Work with investigators, expert witnesses, and other resources to gather evidence and build a strong defense. + Caseload Management:Handle a diverse caseload, ensuring timely case progression and compliance with court deadlines. Work with the agency director to manage caseloads around the state with a balance toward budget and employee retention/satisfaction. + Mentorship & Development:Guide junior attorneys or legal interns as needed, fostering professional growth within any office/jurisdictional need as they arise. + Continuing Education:Stay current on changes in criminal law and public defense best practices through ongoing legal education and professional development. Qualifications PREFERENCES: Preference may be given to applicants who are active members of the Wyoming State Bar and licensed to practice as an attorney in this State, as well as those with experience/education in business management and administration. **You must be licensed to practice law in Wyoming. KNOWLEDGE: + Administrative experience connected to state budgetary processes, personnel and human resource experience, expense authorization procedures, contract drafting and negotiation, and all daily activities associated with the administration and management of a state agency + Strong case management and prioritization skills. + In-depth knowledge of trial procedures, rules of evidence, and criminal statutes. + Excellent legal research and writing abilities. + Ability to think quickly, adapt to courtroom challenges, and advocate effectively for clients and the agency in all administrative capacities.
