Dentist (Oral Surgery Section Head)
Summary The VA Portland Health Care System, in Portland, Oregon is hiring a part-time Dentist as an Oral Surgery Section Head. The Oral Surgery Section Head is non-supervisory and provides direct patient care within the scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and general dentistry in the Dental Service of the VA Portland Health Care System (VAPORHCS). The dentist serves as Section Head of Oral and Maxillofacial subspecialty. Responsibilities Portland is a port city in the Pacific Northwest and the most populous city in the U.S. state of Oregon. Situated in the northwestern area of the state at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers. Portland is known for having the amenities of a major city (such as an international airport, an efficient public transit system, major league sports teams and many museums and art galleries) and the charms of a small city (such as plentiful arts and crafts fairs, independent bookstores and local traditions like the annual Rose Festival Parade). Rain or shine, you can take advantage of the city's proximity to nature by playing in the Willamette River, wandering through lush public parks and gardens, biking the city's 162 miles (261 km) of bike lanes and hiking trails both within city limits and in the nearby Columbia River Gorge. Duties and Responsibilities of the Dentist (Oral Surgery Section Head) include, but are not limited to: Provides evaluation, diagnosis, prevention and surgical and non-surgical treatment of oral diseases, and surgical placement and long-term maintenance of dental implants, on patients assigned. Conducts consultative services on patients referred from other divisions/services of the VAPORHCS and on patients referred from other VA facilities. Provides emergency dental services upon proper referral from triage. Interprets dental radiographs. Incumbent treats diseases, injuries and defects involving both the functional and esthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region. Presents treatment plans and places dental implants. Provides education, training, mentoring, and supervision to students and residents. Facilitates education and training to members of the medical staff through various conferences, committees, and lecture series. Responsible for administrative or managerial activities through participation in clinical, educational, and administrative committees, task groups or special projects. Performs administrative and other tasks as assigned by the Chief and/or Assistant Chief of the VAPORHCS Dental Service. Work Schedule: Monday 0800-1630 PST. Qualifications Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Dentist Basic Requirements A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~ Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. Preferred Experience: Experience working in a VA Medical Center Competence in IV moderate sedation Experience with medically complex patients Proficiency in pathology, cancer reconstruction and/or TMJ surgery Teaching and/or mentoring experience Strong case management, organizational and administrative skills Grade Determinations: The grade to which an applicant is appointed will be determined by the individual's qualifications and assignment. Under the Title 38 "rank-in-person" system, candidates are to be appointed at the highest grade or level within the grade for which they are fully qualified up to the full performance level. For positions above the full performance (journey level) the complexity of the assignment and scope of responsibility are considered in determining grades.
