Job Summary
Zimmer Biomet is seeking a Database Principal Engineer. The Principal Engineer will be responsible for design collaboration, configuration, and maintenance of hybrid-cloud database environments, including virtual and physical infrastructure. As a Database Principal Engineer, you will play a critical role in managing and optimizing our databases, ensuring their performance, security, and scalability. Additionally, you will lead a small team of DBAs, providing mentorship, guidance, and technical expertise.
Duties and Responsibilities:
In this role you will join a global team responsible for maintaining, deploying and tuning our database environment. The applicant must be able to mentor junior engineers on all aspects of databases with cross training and knowledge transfer. In addition, this role will require good documentation skills as you will be responsible for creating and maintaining procedural and policy documents to share with the L1/L2 teams. You may be required to serve in the role of project lead, assuming responsibility for the oversight of most or all aspects of a project.
Collaborate across teams and vendors to make recommendations on best practices for design and installation of new virtual technology.
Work directly with application teams to identify application needs and streamline these processes for application delivery or virtual desktop experience.
Test, upgrade, and migrate database environments while ensuring that change management and defined security protocols for all assigned systems are executed in accordance with client policies and procedures.
Proactively identify trends, determine incident root causes, and minimize client service interruptions through early identification and resolution of problems. Analyze monitoring and historical data and implement changes as required to achieve optimum performance. Provide emergency support for malfunctioning systems. Work may include some off-shift and weekend time periods. Ability to sit for long periods of time.

Expected Areas of Competence (i.e., knowledge, skills and abilities)
Database Platforms:
Strong knowledge of SQL Server 2019 and later versions.
Knowledge of IBM DB2 and Oracle database platforms.
Design, implement, and maintain SQL Server databases, including indexing and TDE.
Monitor database performance, identify bottlenecks, and optimize query execution.
Ensure data integrity, security, and compliance with industry and company standards.
Troubleshoot and resolve database-related issues promptly.
Strong database troubleshooting skills required.
Experience patching and upgrading databases.
Familiar with managing databases on-premises and cloud platforms (i.e. Azure, Oracle Cloud).
Analyze query performance and optimize SQL code.
Implement best practices for database performance, including query optimization, indexing strategies, and caching mechanisms.
Experience with database monitoring tools, such as SolarWinds (preferred) and Oracle Enterprise Manager.
Configure and manage SQL Server Always On Availability Groups
Experience with database backup and recovery technics and processes.
Develop and maintain disaster recovery plans and disaster recovery exercises.
Lead a small team of SQL Server DBAs, providing technical guidance, mentoring, and performance evaluations.
Collaborate with other IT teams, developers, and stakeholders to ensure seamless database operations.
Automate routine tasks using PowerShell, T-SQL, or other scripting languages.
Implement monitoring and alerting solutions to proactively address issues.
Forecast database growth and plan for scalability.
Monitor team SLAs and metrics to ensure the team is meeting company standards.
Ensure the team is maintaining quality standards.
Experience with ITIL tools, such as ServiceNow.
Experience working with global teams

Education/Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in information technology or related field required with 5+ years relevant professional experience.
OR
Bachelor's and master's degree in information technology or related field required with 4+ years relevant professional experience; Strong knowledge of SQL Server 2019 and later versions.Certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, Microsoft Certified: Data Management and Analytics, or Oracle Database Administration Certified Professional are a plus.Baseline performance level expectations Maintains database performance and up-time to company standards.Under minimal direction, performs analysis, design, implementation, and maintenance activities for the database platforms. Partners with application teams and peers to devise or modify procedures to solve complex problems or improve existing processes. Leads projects, solutions and/or processes of low to medium complexity. May include leading teams of non-employee resources. Formulates and/or defines scope and goals of feasibility studies. Works independently and leads assignments of moderate to medium complexity. Provides mentoring and coaching to junior team members. Consistently apply the concepts of proper standard methodologies and best practices. Prepares reports, records progress and creates solutions to IT problems/issues. Interfaces with suppliers and vendors as needed to evaluate software, hardware or services and makes recommendations. Proactively enforces global and local security policies to ensure IT information assets are protected.
