Job overview and responsibilities

A Data Scientist within United's Kinective team will be responsible for development and deployment of machine learning (ML) models and advanced analytics to support United's loyalty program, credit cards business, and growing partner and media businesses. As a team, we focus on leveraging established and cutting-edge tools to measurably improve customer experiences and operational efficiency.

A Data Scientist can expect to work with cross functional teams including business stakeholders, product managers, data engineers, and ML engineers to engage in end-to-end analytic projects: evaluating and scoping projects, exploratory data analysis, feature engineering, model training, model deployment and maintenance, results validation, and communication with stakeholders.

Responsibilities include:

Develop Data Solutions: 

Identifies, researches, or solves large complex problems using big data and statistics, forecasting and machine learning principlesMust bring a positive attitude and curiosity

Planning and Execution:

Can develop an analytical plan/develop hypotheses to test; understands limitations of analysisParticipates in model design, prototype, and model development for several efforts that occur simultaneously, and interfaces with product delivery groups Raises concerns when scope of analysis may not align with time available and can choose an appropriate scope of analysis to conduct balancing ROI to time available Anticipates working team questions to data and approach

Communication:

Helps create and deliver presentations for United leadership and external stakeholdersLead or support status meetings and the frequent communication to key stakeholders at varying levels of United leadershipAbility to communicate complex concepts in a clear, precise, and actionable manner through written and verbal presentation skillsMust exhibit written and spoken English fluency

NOTE: This position provides a hybrid work arrangement with approximately 50% of the time spent onsite at our Chicago office location and 50% remotely.

QualificationsWhat’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):Master's Degree or Bachelor's Degree and 3+ years of professional experience in a relevant fieldStatistics or other related quantitative discipline involving quantitative analysis and application of advanced statistical methodsCoursework or work experience with statistics and/or forecasting techniques Coursework or work experience in model training with PythonCoursework or work experience with R or PythonExperience with SQLGood business, technical, verbal/written communication, presentation and sales skillsExperience with algorithms like Classification (KMeans, DBSCAN, Gaussian Mixture, etc.), Decision Trees, Random Forest, SVM, BoostingGood interpersonal skills and ability to interact with clientsSuccessful completion of interview required to meet job qualificationsReliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the positionMust be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorshipWhat will help you propel from the pack (Preferred Qualifications):Master's degree2+ years of professional experience in analytical field 2+ years professional coding experience in PythonAdvanced data manipulation skills in Python or SQLMinor in computer science and/or formal advanced computer science coursework preferredKnowledge of United/airline industry data sources Experience working with GIT or other version control toolsExperience with project management tools like JIRADemonstrated thought leadership and ability to drive projects that deliver valueExperience with deep learning architecturesExperience with Recommender Systems (Collaborative Filtering, Matrix Factorization, FPMC, FISM)Experience with casual inference and uplift modelsExperience with graph data
The base pay range for this role is $91,770.00 to $125,070.00.
The base salary range/hourly rate listed is dependent on job-related, factors such as experience, education, and skills. This position is also eligible for bonus and/or long-term incentive compensation awards.
