Panthers Data and Analytics represents the Univ of Pittsburgh Athletics Department as part of the Pitt IT Analytics team. Our mission “Improve decision-making by managing data from source to strategy.” We help Athletics improve 4 domains areas: administration, revenue generation, sports performance sports analytics.
We are looking for an experienced data science individual contributor for a unique multi-sport data program aimed at improving competitive outcomes for a division I NCAA athletics department. You believe data science analytics can positively impact success of college athletics teams are eager to help Pitt teams win championships.
You will work closely w/ Engineering, Analytics Data Science teammates to build data solutions informing decision-making for talent identification, roster management sports administration. Factors impact your efforts: player evals, coaching, scholarships, injuries, transfer portal.
You will work w/cross-functional team w/ hybrid work structure (on-site remote staff). Collaborate w/ team of data analytics engineers scientists. Athletics coaches/staff external partners.
Required Technical Experience: relevant data science/analytics exp incl developing quantitative machine learning models; Python or R; database technologies (data lake warehouse) SQL;version control systems (GitHub). Cloud technology familiarity enabling data science work (AWS).
Required non-technical experience: Passion for American Football a strong understanding of the game; Communicate effectively with “translate” between technical non-technical parties; Strong collaboration skills with a demonstrated ability to work well in a team; Self-directed, motivated comfortable working in a fast-paced environment; Aptitude for managing diverse projects navigating through shifting priorities and demands.
Desired (but not mandatory) experience: Experience working in or with a sports front office on player evaluation/valuation projects; developing deploying scalable machine learning models in the sports analytics space (e.g. high-dimensional tracking data modeling, video-based tasks including action recognition event detection, sports NLP tasks such as scouting reports generation analysis commentary analysis)
