Job Description:
Parsons is seeking a mission-focused Data Engineer with an additional background in Artificial Intelligence (AI) Engineering skillsets to support data integration, transformation, and analytic efforts across Joint Staff and Department of Defense (DoD) applications. The engineer will work within the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) within the Joint Staff team to build scalable pipelines, curate and optimize complex datasets, and support data-driven decision-making in high-tempo, operationally relevant environments.
The Ideal candidate would be a proactive engineer with an eye for optimizing data flows, excited by the challenge of supporting military operations with clean, reliable data. They would be someone who thrives at the intersection of data engineering, artificial intelligence, and national security, with a strong understanding of both technical tooling and military environments. They would be able to work autonomously and in team settings to build robust pipelines while understanding the operational implications of the work and have experience handling sensitive data in secure environments and want to contribute meaningfully to the mission of national defense.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop and maintain scalable, efficient data pipelines to ingest, transform, and store data from both traditional and non-traditional sources.Implement and manage medallion architecture (Bronze, Silver, Gold layers) to ensure data quality, traceability, and accessibility.Perform data transformation and optimization to improve pipeline performance and reliability.Work with data science tools (Jupyter Notebooks, Databricks, etc.) and libraries (Pandas, PySpark, Polars, matplotlib, Plotly, etc.) for data wrangling and visualization.Collaborate closely with business and operational stakeholders to understand mission requirements and translate them into technical data solutions.Clearly communicate project progress, blockers, and results to technical and non-technical stakeholders.Curate, assess, and validate data for modeling, dashboarding, or operational use.Distill complex data workflows into clear, concise executive briefings.Support AI/ML and generative AI projects as needed or requiredMINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, Data Science, or a related field. Minimum of 3 years of experience in data engineering, database management, or a related field.Strong programming skills in Python and SQL, with proficiency in TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar frameworks.Experience in developing and deploying neural networks and deep learning models.Familiarity with natural language processing (NLP) concepts and frameworks.Ability to define problem statements clearly and develop detailed queries for language models.AI and NLP Knowledge: Deep understanding of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and natural language processing. Familiarity with language model architectures and functionalities.Strong creative thinking skills to develop conversational abilities and innovative solutions.Demonstrated experience working in or alongside the Department of Defense, preferably in operational or strategic-level environments.Experience in applying AI techniques to defense-related projects or domains.PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
Experience supporting the Joint Staff, Combatant Commands, or other defense/intelligence organizations.Familiar with Advana, Palantir, MSS, ScaleAI, or similar defense analytics platforms.Understanding of military operations, structure, and data types (e.g., unit status, logistics, intel, etc.).Exposure to generative AI, large language models (LLMs), and prompt engineering for structured/unstructured data analysis.SECURITY CLEARANCE:
