We are looking for a Data Engineer to build business-driven data pipelines and enable the use of trusted, accessible data across Wärtsilä Energy. The preferred location for this role is Helsinki, Finland, but other locations in Finland are also negotiable. We offer the possibility of hybrid working. Your role and responsibilities
As a Data Engineer , you’ll work closely with business stakeholders, analysts, and domain experts to develop data solutions that truly serve their needs. You’ll build and maintain pipelines using Databricks and help shape our modern data platform that supports both analytics and AI.
You’ll be part of our central Energy Business data and digital team, a collaborative, business-focused group with expertise in data engineering, AI, governance, and product thinking. Our team plays a vital role in shaping the energy needs and acts as the central data platform team to assist in digitalising use cases.
From extending component lifespans to optimising energy output, your work directly impacts operational results. Recent examples include estimating the lifespan of individual spark plugs using time series data from ignition modules and monitoring power plant efficiency by comparing fuel input with electrical output. These challenges will utilise your data engineering skills to support Wärtsilä’s mission to develop smarter, cleaner energy systems.
As our Data Engineer, you will:
Be working with the Energy Data Platform Build and maintain scalable data pipelines that drive business value Develop robust data transformations across various structured and semi-structured sources Collaborate closely with business teams to co-create usable, valuable data products Support data domain teams in making their data accessible and properly governed within our data mesh framework Implement practical data governance including metadata management, quality controls, and documentation Maintain and enhance our data platform architecture Provide proactive support and guidance to platform users and data domain teams
A key part of your role will involve maintaining data pipelines and ensuring stakeholders have reliable access to data. While some tasks may be routine, your ability to carry them out consistently, and to spot opportunities for improvement along the way, will be highly appreciated.
To succeed in this role, you should have:
Ability to work with our technology stack. Our modern Energy Data Platform is built on: Databricks – Data Engineering, SQL DeltaLake Python and PySpark AWS Terraform GitHub Actions (CI/CD) Bitbucket Databricks BI dashboards and Power BI dashboards
Experience and attitude: Demonstrated experience in data engineering with Databricks, PySpark, and SQL Working knowledge of DevOps tools, particularly Github Actions and Terraform Experience with Open Table Formats such as DeltaLake or Iceberg Willingness to expand your skills into Machine Learning to support our Data Scientists with MLOps tasks Experience working in cloud environments (AWS preferred, Azure also valued) Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders A curious mind and practical approach to problem-solving Clear communication skills and a collaborative working style
We particularly value candidates who can establish and maintain productive long-term relationships with stakeholders across the organisation.
Bonus Qualifications:
Experience in data governance or domain data ownership Experience in cloud engineering in AWS Background in energy, manufacturing, or construction sectors Personal programming projects or contributions (we'd love to hear about these!)
