Data Center Capacity PlannerJob Description Summary
The Power/Space/HVAC Capacity Planner(PSC CP) is responsible for reviewing daily network equipment installation requests at data centers. This includes approving requests after an in-depth review of available Power, Space, and Cooling systems (“PSC”) within a data center.Job Description
This position works under the direct supervision of PSC Capacity Engineers and will be assigned a portfolio of facilities within a specific territory. responsible for the short and long term network equipment growth viability of technical buildings. The 3 major planning functional areas of responsibility include: Power, Space, and Cooling capacity planning and management.
Space: Plan and design the equipment layout of a technical facility. This includes providing space on individual equipment growth requests, as well as, designing space for the long term viability of the building. The PSC CM must take both potential future needs and current requests from planning organizations into consideration when creating the design. The PSC CM uses AutoCAD as the primary design tool for equipment layouts.
Power/Cooling: The PSC CM manages capacities of DC Power plants, generators, and HVAC systems in the technical buildings. The PSC CM calculates cooling and power requirements from equipment growth projects or forecasts. When capacities near or exceed specified power or cooling thresholds, the PSC CM sizes capacity additions and directs the Design & Construction (D&C) organization via a formal hand-off to build the facility in accordance to the specified requirements.
The major job duties performed by the PSC CM are described in more detail below:
1. Power Capacity Management and Planning. Analyze and evaluate how much capacity is in each data center and how much spare capacity is available. This requires the analysis of both AC and DC electrical elements including rectifiers, batteries, BDFB’s/PDF’s, UPS and generators. Power management also includes assigning appropriate fusing for network elements.
2. Space Planning. Evaluate the existing layout of equipment and design the most efficient plan projecting future needs and managing current space requests. Given that equipment size is not standard among manufacturers and new equipment is deployed rapidly to support new services, the layout for future growth is dynamic. Changes are constantly made based on input from planning organizations and changes in equipment specifications.
3. HVAC Capacity Management Calculate and analyze equipment cooling requirements ensuring that equipment in technical buildings is kept cool enough to function properly. In addition to capacity management of HVAC systems, cooling distribution requirements are determined to ensure cool air is directed to the network equipment.
