GEICO’s Cybersecurity organization has an exciting opportunity for an accomplished Cybersecurity Data Protection Engineering. This individual will play a key role within GEICO’s Cybersecurity Data Security, Protection, and Privacy team, with a focus on data protection management.
Position Description
Staff Engineer – Cybersecurity Data Protection plays a key role in protecting the organization’s systems and sensitive data by supporting the design, implementation, and operation of data protection strategies and tools. The role focuses on structured and unstructured data discovery, encryption, classification, and retention processes to mitigate data risk, ensure regulatory compliance, and support the cybersecurity program’s overall maturity. The Staff Engineer will collaborate with senior engineers, cross-functional teams, and leadership to maintain and evolve the data protection program.
Position Responsibilities
As an Engineer, you will:
Support the implementation of data protection strategies, including classification, encryption, access control, and retention.
Perform structured and unstructured data discovery, classification, and mapping across environments and data stores (e.g., SaaS apps, databases, cloud platforms).
Assist in identifying and addressing data protection risks and supporting regulatory and policy requirements (e.g., NYDFS, PCI).
Support the development and maintenance of encryption processes for data at rest and in transit, including documentation and process tracking.
Assist in managing DSPM tools (e.g., Cyera, Laminar, Symmetry Systems, BigID) and integrating them into CI/CD pipelines and hybrid/cloud environments.
Collaborate with the SecOps team to triage, investigate, and remediate DSPM alerts using SIEM and SOAR tools (e.g., Splunk, IBM QRadar, Palo Alto XSOAR).
Assist in automating repetitive security tasks using Python, PowerShell, or other scripting tools.
Contribute to cross-functional initiatives focused on improving data governance, ownership, and minimization strategies.
Work with architects, engineers, and business units to align data protection strategies with organizational goals.
Qualifications
Experience with data classification, discovery, and cataloging tools across structured and unstructured data.
Familiarity with DSPM platforms and security workflows for cloud services (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP).
Understanding of data protection techniques including encryption, tokenization, and DLP tools.
Experience supporting data access and retention policies in line with internal policy and regulatory requirements.
Hands-on experience integrating DSPM and data security tools into engineering and operations environments.
Knowledge of cloud-native security tools and data mapping (e.g., AWS Macie, Azure Purview).Strong knowledge of cybersecurity laws, regulations, and best practices
Scripting experience (Python, Bash, PowerShell) for security automation and reporting.
Strong problem-solving, documentation, and collaboration skills.
Ability to effectively communicate technical risks and requirements to cross-functional stakeholders.
Knowledge of data security frameworks, standards, and protocols
Strong understanding of data privacy laws and regulations (i.e. NYDFS, PCI, etc.)
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Excellent communication and presentation skills to effectively communicate with management and other stakeholders
Ability to excel in fast-paced, startup-like environment
Experience
5+ years of experience in cybersecurity, with focus on data protection and privacy
2+ years working with DSPM tools and/or encryption strategies.
3+ years of experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, or another cloud service
Experience working in hybrid or multi-cloud environments preferred.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent education or work experience
One or more of the following cybersecurity certifications are highly desired:
Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)
Certified Information Security Manager (CISM)
Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC)
Annual Salary
$105,000.00 - $230,000.00The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
