Position Overview

Thomson Reuters is seeking a Current Awareness Editor for its Alert24 Current Awareness service to provide concise, timely legal news summaries for a legal and lay audience in New Zealand. The Editor will identify, analyze, and distill essential legal developments from news sources, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and compliance with editorial guidelines.

About the Role

In this opportunity as Editor, Current Awareness, you will:

Conduct targeted internet searches to identify relevant news items across multiple legal subject areas.

Analyze and summarize critical information from news sources, focusing on accuracy, impartiality, and clarity.

Create original, compelling headlines and paraphrase news content into concise, 60-word summaries.

Ensure all items reference original sources, avoid direct copying (except quotations), and are written for both legal and lay audiences.

Apply editorial standards, including political neutrality and appropriate handling of sensitive information (e.g., use of “alleged” in criminal matters, anonymizing minors).

Assign and complete all required Alert24 metadata fields, including record type, subject date, embargo date, organizations/people, topics, jurisdiction, and status.

Perform final proofreading and spell-checking of all summaries.

Demonstrates strong technical skills and effectively uses generative AI and other tools to improve productivity and accuracy. Adapts to various projects and emerging technologies

Load and publish news items within the Alert24 system.

About You

You are a fit for the role of Editor, Current Awareness if your background includes:

A Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or a related field.

Experience in legal, news, or current awareness publishing environments.

Exceptional summarization, writing, and editing skills, with strong attention to detail.

Ability to analyze complex information quickly and communicate it clearly to both legal and lay audiences.

Familiarity with editorial standards for impartiality and responsible reporting, especially in criminal and family law.

Competence in using online research tools and content management systems.

Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.

Adaptability and a collaborative approach to achieving team and company goals.
