The Critical Environments Operating Engineer supports the successful operation of the client’s data centers.  These facilities operate 24/7 and risks must be managed to allow for continual operational up-time. 

The Operating Engineer will have responsibility for the operations and maintenance at the client’s data centers and will take daily direction from engineering leadership. Responsibilities include the support of all data center engineering, facility and grounds maintenance, and other site support functions. This role will be part of a team that is accountable for the operational performance readiness, reliability, and integrity of the mission-critical infrastructure systems which include (but not limited to) the following:

Chillers, Pumps, Cooling Towers, VFD’s, AHU’s, CRAC’s, CRCU’s, UPS’s, PDU’s, Batteries, Generators, Fuel Pumps and Fuel Storage, Switchgear, Utility Feeds, Transfer Switches, Process Piping, Fire Detection, Fire Suppression, BAS, and Leak Detection systems.

The successful candidate must have an understanding how these systems function and be capable of performing corrective measures. This includes resetting alarms, operating breakers and switches, starting back-up systems, etc. This individual will also be required to oversee service contract providers that support the facility systems. Individuals are expected to demonstrate technical expertise in one craft area (Electrical, HVAC, or Central Utility Plant Operations) and be multi-skilled in others in order to successfully complete daily/weekly work assignments.

The Critical Environments Operating Engineer will be required to perform a number of preventive maintenance and reactive activities as well as support the account Critical Environments Program for the region. The primary focus of this position is to provide shift coverage and on-call plant operational support for all facilities systems, including electrical, HVAC, and building controls. This person will have the responsibility of providing written reports/logs and maintaining reliable and efficient operation of the facilities equipment that supports the Data Centers and other Critical Facilities in the region.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Operating Engineers must be able to immediately recognize system shortcomings, respond to operational and emergency situations, and provide technical guidance and direction during real time problem managementOperates building systems in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with government regulatory compliance and standard operating proceduresPerform daily walk-through of sites in order to ensure proper operation of electrical and HVAC equipment and identify any potentially hazardous conditionsMust interface with Critical Operations Team to coordinate Critical Area Program.  This will include but not be limited to: scheduling maintenance windows in Change Management, participating in staff meetings, interfacing with key vendors and project management personnel, and keeping up with written communications within the Critical Environment TeamIdentify safety hazards within the building and incorporate the remediation of such hazards to ensure that the building’s staff and occupants work in a safe environmentParticipate in the safety training program and any other safety protocols outlined by company or client policyPerform all duties in a safe manner and in accordance with established work standards and practicesEnsure all infrastructure and compliance documentation for the building is maintained and up to date, including up-to-date building drawings and one-lines as well as documentation mandated for the purpose of maintaining regulatory compliance with Federal, State or Local lawMust be able to act in a consulting capacity on projects and new designPerform predictive maintenance, preventative maintenance, maintenance routines and equipment rounds, and service requests as directed in accordance with Preventative Maintenance ProgramPerform the installation, maintenance, repair and operation of mechanical and electrical equipment and systemsInspects and repairs pumps, fans, valves, and motors ensuring proper operation of the facility equipment and systemsPerform general facility related maintenance work including plumbing repairs, replacement of lamps/ballasts, door hardware and other maintenance tasksPerform emergency or preventative maintenance repairs off hours on nights and weekends as neededSupport vendors on preventive and repair activities that cannot be performed in houseAdminister the Critical Facility Change Request notifications and Critical Facility Incident Reporting processes to Data Center Management standardsUnderstand and work within the accounts Computerized Maintenance Management SystemResponsible for keeping records of buildings rounds and readings, all engineering logs, and engineering data sheetsTrack electrical/mechanical loads for all critical systemsWork collaboratively with the Energy Management team to develop programs that reduce energy consumption and increase sustainable practices.Comply with all company policies and proceduresParticipate in Company Training and local professional trade organizations and third-party training programs in order to stay current with technological trends of the industryPerform additional duties or acts in other capacities as required to meet the company’s and/or the client’s objectives

PHYSICAL WORK ABILITIES & REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires frequent walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, lifting, stooping, and working/extending overhead, including: 

Walking large, campus-like settings. Lifting a minimum of 50 lbs. Climbing stairs and navigating rooftops to access equipment. Using ladders up to 30 ft and working from heights. Ability to Climb a ladder with a 300-lb weight limit. Must be able to work different schedules. Must be able to work Holidays. Must be able to respond to site emergencies. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or state equivalentPrefer two years of college or related trade schoolingThree years of plant building operating experience, data center experience preferred (including UPS systems, emergency generators, and switch-gear)Operating Engineers license (SMA) or equivalentPrefer experience in Electrical or HVAC/Refrigeration trades (journeyman level or higher)Certification as a Universal Technician for CFC’s or the ability to earn within 90 days of hire

 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Ability to perform all work using the proper personnel protective equipment (PPE)Adhere, in strict accordance, to all applicable safety policies, procedures, and practicesHave thorough knowledge of energy efficient building system operations to reduce operating costs and satisfy customer requirementsDemonstrate aptitude for and/or have practical experience with thermodynamic, electrical, and/or mechanical systems, as well as computer-controlled equipmentWorking knowledge of computer applications, including Word, Outlook, and ExcelProficiency with BAS & CMMS systems preferred
