Credit Policy Manager (Hybrid - See Job Description for Listed Locations)
*** Work Arrangement/Location: This is a hybrid position requiring in-office work three days every week and will be based at M&T Plaza, Buffalo, NY, NYC, NY or Suffolk, NY.Overview:

Responsible for the planning, leadership, problem resolution, analysis and governance of the bank’s credit policy function.  Manages the creation, maintenance, interpretation and governance of all M&T Credit Policies via the bank’s Credit Policy Manual. 

Primary Responsibilities:Manage the creation, implementation and currency of the Credit Policy Manual including routine updates and ensuring that all recommendations are properly approved and move efficiently through the governance process to maintain and uphold policy on an on-going basis.Manage the process for developing and maintaining all Corporate Credit policies and ensuring consistency with the bank’s risk appetite. Present Credit Policy recommendations for approval.Partner with business line leadership and coordinate Credit Policy working groups.Interface with consultants and liaison with senior leadership to implement recommendations. Facilitate the communication of changes to the Credit Policy Manual to all stakeholders ensuring awareness and support adherence to the processes to minimize risk. Work with Corporate Training to develop training and communications ensuring all appropriate employees are properly trained on existing and new policies and procedures through new hire and annual required training.  Monitor completion of required training and follow-up with management as required, ensuring completion. Identify credit policy controls and provide direction and approval of test scripts.Understand and apply M&T’s portfolio and risks and ensuring that the policies are well aligned and in balance at all times.     Apply Credit Policy research (Industry Best Practices) to recommended policy changes. Responsible for understanding and applying industry standards to M&T’s credit policy where applicable.Contribute to strategic planning and short-term initiatives of the loan administration department. Responsible for providing the lead on multiple projects at the department or division level. Responsible for the contingency planning and regulatory compliance of the bank’s credit policy.Exercise usual authority of a manager concerning staffing, performance appraisals, promotions, salary recommendations, performance management and terminations.Understand and adhere to the Company’s risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls in accordance with the Company’s Risk Appetite.  Design, implement, maintain and enhance internal controls to mitigate risk on an ongoing basis.  Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.Complete other related duties as assigned.

Scope of Responsibilities:

This position will be responsible to rebuild and maintain structure of the bank’s credit policy manual and ensure Credit Policy maintenance (document updates and track and monitor change requests).  Adherence to the Credit Policy in everyday activities minimizes risk to the organization that results from non-adherence or failure to properly follow them. Will need to champion change and innovation in the delivery of bank-wide solutions.  Position must build and maintain relationships with internal and external customers in a manner that maximizes shareholder return. 

Supervisory/ Managerial Responsibilities:

Responsible for a small team of analysts.

Oversees training and development of direct reports. 

The position is responsible for the day to day and direction of the department and requires knowledge of business, applicable regulations and affiliated technology.

Education and Experience Required:

Bachelor’s degree (English/Business/Communications) and minimum of 7 years financial services experience including lending or writing policy and interpreting regulations or in lieu of degree, a combined minimum of 11 years higher education and/or work experience including 7 years financial services experience including lending or writing policy and interpreting regulations. Two years leadership, coaching, mentoring or supervising experience. Experience dealing with various federal and state regulatory bodies processes and procedures. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Strong cross-functional collaboration skills. Strong presentation skills. Ability to maintain strong working relationships with management as well as business partners within and outside of the Bank.

Education and Experience Preferred:

Experience with various bank systems.Proficient in software utilized in department.  Experience and knowledge of all bank products.  Knowledge of the regulatory environment and industry trends. Significant experience in commercial lending practices processes and controls.

M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $145,114.31 - $241,857.18 Annual (USD). The successful candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
