Job overview and responsibilities

Counsel for in-house legal department at a global airline who provides strategic legal advice and counsel on all aspects of international legal matters related to United and its affiliated companies, with a primary focus on Asia Pacific, Canada, Africa, and other regions as needed. Responsibilities include serving as a lead attorney who independently handles a broad range of complex international legal issues, including regulatory, labor and employment, corporate governance, commercial, and litigation matters related to our international operations and business across multiple time zones. Provides proactive and holistic legal support to internal business partners on international business plans, strategies, and operations at new and existing stations.

Provides advice and counsel to business stakeholders on a broad range of legal issues arising in our international locations, including regulatory, labor and employment, corporate governance, commercial, and litigation matters related to our international locations which include the regions of Asia Pacific, Canada, Africa, Latin America and other regions as neededProactively identifies and advises on legal issues and risks associated with international business plans, strategies, and operations at new and existing stationsPartners with leadership and stakeholders across the enterprise to support and implement policies and procedures related to the company’s international operations and businessProvides training and legal support to internal business partners on a variety of legal subject areas, including international passenger regulations, employment best practices, and litigation risk strategiesCollaborates with other in-house counsel on cross-divisional and other global matters impacting various business departments to ensure consistency

Manages outside counsel and associated budgets for all legal matters within the geographic areas of responsibility

Hybrid to Chicago or Houston. Minimum of 25% travel.

What’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):

Juris Doctorate degreeIllinois or Texas Bar admission; must be a member in good standing with the Illinois or Texas BarAt least 3 years of legal experience at a law firm, corporate legal department, or government agencyWorking knowledge of international laws applicable to US-based companies operating around the worldStrong interpersonal, writing, and verbal communication skills Strong organizational skills and the ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and work independently and as a part of a team to prioritize responsibilities, take initiative and self-motivate/self-manage work and timeExtensive knowledge of all relevant aspects of case and matter managementMust be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorshipSuccessful completion of interview required to meet job qualificationReliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
