What will you do? 

A day in the life of a Counsel, Risk & Litigation at VF looks a little like this. 

As Counsel, Risk & Litigation, you will be responsible for assisting the Associate General Counsel, Employment, Litigation, and Operations, and other business partners in the management and handling of litigation and other risk related matters in the Company.

You will assist in handling informal dispute and litigation matters, including litigation management, administrative charge management, and advising on policies and procedures. In this role, you will perform job duties consistent within safety, legal, and regulatory requirements as well as Company values, standards, culture and business practices. The ideal candidate will act with the highest level of integrity and business and personal ethical standards in all aspects of job performance.

This position is located in Costa Mesa, California.

Let’s break down that day-in-the-life a bit more. 

Provides in-house legal counsel on risk and litigation related matters, which may include, but not be limited to, real estate, environmental, contract disputes, personal injury, and other charges and/or arbitrations, and generally assists the Associate General Counsel, Employment, Litigation & Operations.

Ensures compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and policies.

Identifies and assesses legal risks and opportunities within various legal risk areas and advises accordingly.

Reviews and updates business policies to comply with legal requirements while meeting business needs.

Independently handles legal matters and projects ranging from basic to complex.

Partners with Risk Management team on pending litigation and any applicable insurance coverage.

Recognizes when to elevate certain matters to the attention of the Associate General Counsel,
Employment, Litigation and Operations and/or General Counsel.

Supervises, manages and evaluates outside counsel on litigation.

Educates and trains clients and stakeholders on legal matters, policies and procedures.

Advocates VF’s interests in assigned matters.

Establishes and maintains relationships, credibility and trust with clients, stakeholders, legal team members and other colleagues.

Perform other tasks as assigned from time to time by the Associate General Counsel, Employment, Litigation and Operations.

Able to travel at times – approx. 15%.

Sound judgment; ability to clearly make reasoned recommendations; ability to cross think and determine who should be kept informed.

A positive, “can do”, attitude committed to the success of the Employment, Litigation & Operations team and the legal department as a whole.

A good sense of humor, ability to laugh at oneself and desire to have fun at work while meeting business priorities.

Self-starter with curiosity, good business sense and a sense of urgency, honesty and fairness.

Self-confident and inspires confidence from clients.

 

Required Education & Experience:

Must have a JD degree from an accredited law school and active CA bar membership.

Must have a minimum of 5 years of litigation experience with a corporate legal department or a nationally recognized law firm.

Prefer candidate with experience in handling complex litigation before federal, state courts and administrative agencies.

Prefer candidate with experience in counseling clients on legal risk across subject areas.

Strong writing skills required.

Strong communication skills required.

Experience with advising on and litigation under California law preferred.

Hiring Range:

$146,880.00 USD - $183,600.00 USD annually

Incentive Potential: This position is eligible for additional compensation awards that may include an annual incentive plan, sales incentive, or commission potential. Specific details of the additional compensation eligibility for this position will be provided during the recruiting and interview process.
