Summary This position is located in the Nutrition and Food Service of a Veterans Affairs Medical Center, with responsibility for providing melas and nutritional care to veterans patients at a Medical center. the primary purpose is to prepare nutritious high quality meals for service to the veterans. Responsibilities Major duties and responsibilities include: Follows menus, production sheets, and recipes to prepare items in the quantity needed. Performs a full range of simple cooking by preparing and cooking meals that require little or no processing. Grills eggs, hamburgers, meat patties, pancakes and French toast; broil meats, and assembles a variety of sandwiches. Prepares fresh, canned, and frozen vegetables; bakes frozen potatoes, premade cookie dough and muffin batters. Washes, peels and cuts fruit and vegetables by hand or machine. Weighs, measures and assembles ingredients for regular and modified diet. Combine ingredients according to precisely written recipes to produce quality food items, minimizing preparation time and food waste. Operate a variety of kitchen equipment; follow safety procedures regarding the operation of equipment. Follow the sanitary food handling procedures; utilize or discard ingredients by expiration date. Disassembles and assemble components parts and accessories for cleaning. Achieves certification in ServeSafe and can apply knowledge of food safety. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Is subject to continuous standing, walking, frequent bending, reaching pushing and pulling. Lift or move objects weighing up to 40 lbs unassisted and occasionally lifts or move objects more than 40 lbs with assistance of other workers. Performs work in areas of temperature extremes. Work is carried out in kitchen/dish room areas that are often hot, uncomfortable, and noisy. Environment includes exposure to extreme cold while working in walk-in refrigerators and freezers for extended periods of time to complete duties. Works with other cooks, food service workers, and supervisors. Exposed to stems, cooking odors, and noise from equipment and conversation. Subject to hazards of cuts, bruises, strains, burns and falls in kitchen equipment. Strong cleaning and sanitizing solutions may be skin and respiratory irritants. Performs work in patient care settings where there may be exposure to contagious disease. May have contact with patients who demonstrate verbally and/or physically aggressive behavior. Required to wear proper hair covering and clean uniform. Wear disposable gloves when handling food for service, and proper protective equipment when completing cleaning activities. Education Additional Information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
