Job Description

The Avery Dennison Identification Solutions group is looking for a Controls Engineer to join the team at our manufacturing site in Miamisburg, Ohio. In this position, you will report to the Manufacturing Engineering Manager and provide continuous improvement and troubleshooting of all electrical/electronic systems. Provides electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic expertise to the Maintenance, Engineering and Operations departments to ensure continuous plant operations and high efficiency. Ability to work cross-functionally, build effective relationships, and knowledge of electrical/electronic systems are key to the role.

 

Responsibilities

Support and maintenance of plant controls systems including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Human Machine Interface applications, Vision Systems, Industry 4.0 OT systems, Electronic Drives, and Instrumentation.  

Assist Maintenance and Engineering with troubleshooting of process disturbances.  

Provide support for manufacturing operations to resolve production and quality issues that arise on a day-to- day basis.

Perform effective root cause problem solving to solve process issues associated with equipment and/or machine performance.

Assist in development of capital plans to support the divisional drives and controls strategy.

Develop a long term plan for updating controls hardware/software/firmware to allow for capital planning.  

Troubleshoot electrical malfunctions, inspect circuits and wiring for shielding and grounding, and test electrical equipment for safety and efficiency.

Work from schematics, drawings, layouts, or other specifications to locate and diagnose trouble in the electrical system or equipment.

Create and update electrical schematics and drawings.

Drive standardization of drive and controls systems and SCADA systems throughout the site; assess gaps against best practices and develop plans to close gaps.

Interact with the Maintenance and Engineering team to ensure equipment reliability.

Identify safety issues, support safety initiatives, and recommend and implement effective solutions.

Provides support for technology upgrade projects to improve product quality and manufacturing effectiveness.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology, or 10 plus years in controls engineering environment or role

5+ years of experience in controls or electrical engineering function in a manufacturing environment

2+ years capital project management experience

Expertise in Control Systems and Automation

Ladder Logic and Structured Text programming

PLC/HMI: Mitsubishi, Rockwell, Lenze, Codesys

Machine Network Configuration

Experience with AC and DC drive systems

PowerFlex, Lenze, Rexroth

Industry 4.0 data collection systems

OPC UA, Kepware, Wonderware

OT Network Configuration

Knowledge of Control System Safety and associated hardware

National Electric Code NFPA70E

Assist with the management of capital projects and maintenance activities, including coordination of contractors, vendors, and maintenance

Experience creating electrical prints with AutoCAD

Ability to read and understand electrical and pneumatic schematics along with proper electrical wiring/ panel building methods

Ability to understand and troubleshoot PLC ladder logic and make system edits as needed

Hands-on ability to troubleshooting equipment and process issues and get to root cause

Strong organizational and project management skills with ability to self manage projects to completion

Effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to effectively present complex topics in a concise manner
