Description We are looking for an hands on Controller to lead the financial operations of a non-profit organization based in New Orleans, Louisiana. This role involves overseeing accounting processes, ensuring compliance with regulations, and providing leadership to the 3 person accounting team. The Controller will collaborate closely with the Chief Financial Officer to develop strategies that enhance financial efficiency and support organizational goals. Responsibilities: • Supervise and mentor the accounting team, fostering growth and promoting efficient workflows. • Prepare financial projections and coordinate budget and forecast processes, ensuring accurate grant and contract reporting. • Develop, monitor, and enforce financial policies and procedures to guide organizational decisions. • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations by staying informed of changes and implementing necessary adjustments. • Plan and oversee financial audits, including annual audits and grant-specific reviews, coordinating activities with relevant stakeholders. • Analyze budget variances and provide monthly financial reports to organizational leadership. • Recruit, train, and evaluate accounting staff, implementing corrective actions as needed in alignment with company policies. • Stay updated on financial technology and trends to drive innovation and compliance. • Represent the organization within the community to foster collaboration and enhance its reputation. • Review journal entries, expenditures, and salary allocations to ensure accuracy and alignment with budgets. Requirements • CPA candidate with proven expertise in general accounting and federal grant accounting within a non-profit setting. • Proficiency in accounting software, including Abila or smiliar, and advanced skills in Microsoft Excel tools and spreadsheet applications. • Strong organizational abilities and excellent written and verbal communication skills. • Familiarity with month-end close processes and full-cycle accounting. • Experience with fund accounting specific to non-profit organizations. • Knowledge of payroll systems, particularly Paylocity or similar. • Minimum of 5 years of relevant accounting experience. • Ability to develop and implement internal controls to safeguard assets and manage risks effectively.
