Construction Trainee / Apprentice


    

Position Summary:

Bituminous Roadways, Inc. (BR) is a growing, award-winning, and established union highway/heavy contractor looking for Construction Trainees / Apprentices to join our team. 

Our Construction Trainees / Apprentices work under direct supervision to assist with the installation, repair, and maintenance of asphalt. This is an entry-level, hands-on position that offers paid on-the-job training and the opportunity to grow into a skilled trade role within the paving or heavy highway construction industry.

Our office is located in Mendota Heights, MN and our jobs are all local, within the 11-county metro area.

Job Type: Seasonal (May - November), Full Time

 

Key Responsibilities:

Assist in the placement, spreading, raking, and compaction asphalt Operate basic hand tools (shovel, rake, lute, broom) to support asphalt paving activities Work around heavy equipment such as pavers, rollers, and skid steers Clean and prepare job sites including sweeping, grading, and layout assistance Follow directions from foreman and experienced crew members to learn techniques and safety protocols Assist with traffic control setup (signs, cones, flagging) Maintain a clean and safe work environment by adhering to all company safety policies Perform other duties as assigned to support the crew

Training & Development:

Participate in structured OJT and/or apprenticeship program Receive mentorship and skill development in: Asphalt placement & compaction Site layout and grade checking Equipment operation basics Quality control and safety procedures Opportunity for advancement into Operator, CDL Driver, or Foreman roles

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be at least 18 years old High school diploma or GED preferred Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation Physically able to perform labor-intensive tasks (lift 50+ lbs, stand for long periods, work in outdoor weather conditions) Willingness to work flexible hours including early mornings, evenings, and weekends Ability to follow instructions and work in a team setting All candidates are required to pass a thorough Background Check, Physical and Drug Test. Regular attendance and overtime are required.

Preferred Qualifications (Not Required):

Prior experience in general labor, construction, or landscaping Interest in pursuing a career in the construction or asphalt industry OSHA 10 certification or willingness to obtain Knowledge of the Twin Cities and surrounding suburbs. Good vision for close tolerance work and any night work may be required.
