Job Description
We are seeking three Construction Inspectors to join our team in support of a significant expansion project. The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion represents the largest highway construction project in Virginia’s history. This transformative project aims to widen the current four-lane segments along nearly ten miles of the I-64 corridor in Norfolk and Hampton, introducing new twin tunnels across the harbor. This expansion will enhance capacity, alleviate major congestion, and improve travel time reliability.
ResponsibilitiesPerform quality control of VDOT Roadway construction, including field soils, concrete, asphalt, and aggregate testing, to ensure contract compliance for routine activities under supervision.Upon demonstrating required skills and aptitude, candidates may become eligible for more high level positions.Conduct materials testing such as nuclear gauge soil and aggregate density.Review and perform materials tests on concrete deliveries in accordance with VDOT and ACI standards and make cylinders for lab delivery.Verify construction of Roadway and Highway materials compliance with drawings, VDOT specifications, standards, special provisions, and contract documents.Monitor and observe limited contractual fieldwork, including excavations, storm drain pipe installation, drainage facilities, concrete placement, and more, under supervision.Advise inspector and contractor supervisors of non-conforming field tests.Take field measurements of materials and record daily production and test results.Complete daily reports with attached VDOT materials testing forms.Receive materials delivery tickets for compliance and submit to the contractor.Take assignments and direction from Quality Control Lead Management and Inspectors.Inspect and monitor contractual fieldwork, including excavations, drainage facilities, concrete placement, steel and precast member erections, soil and aggregate placement, road surfaces, and structures of moderate complexity.Advise contractors of deficiencies, issues, and noncompliance, providing reference documents for conclusions.Oversee and enforce the installation of erosion/siltation controls and highway work zones and traffic control devices.Prepare daily diaries, inspection checklists, and materials testing forms.Essential SkillsTransportationSoils testingConstructionAggregate testingAsphaltConstruction inspectionInspectionRoadway constructionOSHAACI certifiedConcrete testingConcrete inspectionSoil samplingSoil testingBridge constructionAdditional Skills & QualificationsMinimum of one certification if no degree is held. Certifications include Asphalt Field Level 1 and 2, Asphalt Plant Level 1 and 2, Soils and Aggregates, VDOT Concrete, ACI Concrete Field Testing, WACEL Concrete Level I, and NICET Construction Materials Testing.Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related fields preferred.0-2+ years of experience.Experience working outdoors.Ability to work night shifts and weekends as needed, with prior notice and additional compensation.Reliability and dependability.Ability to fill out reports accurately and timely.Work Environment
This position is predominantly outdoors, located in the field and on-site at the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. The role involves exposure to various weather conditions and requires adherence to safety standards. Inspectors may be required to work night shifts and weekends with advance notice. The company provides a gas card and company vehicle for work-related travel.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $22.00 - $30.00/hr.
