Computational Fluid Dynamics Engineer, Hydrogen Storage

Job Title: Engineer – Computational Fluid Dynamics   

  

Summary: 

The Computational Fluid Dynamics Engineer is responsible for fluid and heat transfer analysis related to the filling and emptying of conformable hydrogen pressure vessels.  This engineer will use commercial CFD codes as well as custom reduced-order models.  Work will be done in collaboration with Product Engineers and Development Engineers to ensure that tank designs meet product requirements.  

  

Performance Expectations 

SolidWorks, or similar CAD modeling is a must. Hands on and computational/numerical experience is essential.   

Perform finite element modeling, simulation, and analysis using ANSYS or similar, and SolidWorks, CATIA, or other CAD software.   

Automotive (preferred) CFD simulation of thermal components and systems.  

Fluid mechanics and heat transfer in automotive systems including laminar and turbulent flow as well as convection, conduction and radiation.   

Strong Knowledge and understanding of fluid mechanics and the thermal sciences.  

Ability to read complex engineering drawings and generate 3D CAD models from them.  

Assist team in development of innovative, robust mechanical designs by imparting knowledge of material thermal properties and fluid dynamics.   

 Enhance and/or develop new simulation tools/capabilities as needed.   

Provide technical guidance and direct support to team members to conduct testing of the hydrogen vessel to validate the design and performance objectives and achieve technical project milestones.   

Lead simulation for filling and emptying pressurized hydrogen tanks. 

Conduct 3D CFD simulations of filling and emptying using commercially available software, Ansys Fluent is preferred.

Recommend product design changes to optimize filling and emptying performance 

Comply with all applicable company policies and procedures (i.e. Quality Systems Procedures).   

 

 

 

Credentials 

Bachelor of Science in Engineering or equivalent.  Master of Science in Engineering is preferred.  5+ years of experience with Ansys Fluent or equivalent Strong design and integration skills using 3-D CAD software.  High degree of mechanical understanding.  Well-developed understanding of hydrogen gas systems   Working knowledge of different composite materials and/or systems, preferred  5+ years of automotive or aerospace product development experience preferred Experience modeling high pressure vessels and/or equipment is strongly preferred Experience writing reduced-order model simulation code based on ODE/PDE solvers (Python or MATLAB preferred) 
 

Desired Characteristics 

Strong design and integration skills using 3-D CAD software.  

High Degree of mechanical understanding.  

Well-developed understanding of composite structures and manufacturing techniques.  

Working knowledge of different fiber and resin systems.   

5+ years of automotive or aerospace product development experience preferred.   

Experience modeling high pressure vessels and/or equipment preferred.  

Enjoy a combination of computer-based and pen-and-paper theoretical work.  

Thrive in a dynamic R&D environment and adapt smoothly to our evolving needs.
