Key Responsibilities:
· Support individuals in building recovery and resilience skills tailored to their goals
· Develop and assist with individualized treatment and recovery plans
· Share lived experiences of recovery to provide hope and inspire change
· Promote coping strategies and connect individuals to natural and community supports
· Facilitate educational groups and peer support activities
· Assist clients in scheduling treatments and arranging transportation when needed
· Engage in regular communication with referral sources, guardians, and care teams
· Participate in staffings to promote continuity of care
· Make referrals for services not offered within the treatment setting
· Document services according to state and CARF standards
· Provide crisis intervention when necessary
· Attend professional development training (minimum 36 hours every 2 years)
Education, Experience, and/or Credential Qualifications:
· High school diploma or equivalent
· Must self-identify as a present or former client of mental health or substance use services, or be in recovery from either
· Completion of a state-approved Peer Specialist training program
· Must pass a standardized certification exam (if required)
· Missouri applicants:
Must complete the application at mopeerspecialist.com
May be required to attend a 5-day basic training program and pass the Missouri certification exam within 6 months
Additional Qualifications:
· Must be at least 21 years of age
· Valid driver’s license, acceptable driving record, and current auto insurance required
· Must pass background check (criminal record, driving, abuse/neglect, fingerprinting)
· Must obtain First Aid and CPR certification within 3 months of hire and upon renewal
· Behavioral management training required within 30 days of employment (CPI or Verbal De-escalation depending on program)
· Must be able to maintain professional boundaries while sharing personal experiences
· Strong verbal and written communication skills
· Familiarity with legal procedures, community resources, and recovery-focused support
· Ability to complete required CPRC documentation within 30 days (if applicable)
· Completion of required training in the first year, including: suicide prevention, community support philosophy, client rights, disability-related illnesses, and more
Physical Requirements
· Ability to lift up to 10 pounds occasionally
· Frequent typing, writing, and use of hands and fingers
· Mostly seated work with occasional walking or standing
