The Communications Manager, Sustainability and Innovation, leads enterprise sustainability reporting and executes communications for a wide range of internal and external audiences, in support of efforts to protect and strengthen PPG's reputation.
Reporting to PPG's Sr. Leader - External Communications, with dotted line reporting to the VP, Global Sustainability, and working collaboratively across the organization, the Communications Manager, Sustainability and Innovation, will drive PPG's internal and external sustainability and science and technology communications strategy and sustainability reporting strategy, including developing content, gathering quantitative and qualitative data, evaluating impacts and outcomes and developing an industry-leading Sustainability Report, and stakeholder engagement plan. You will also be responsible for ongoing identification and promotion of key milestones and achievements against the company's sustainability and science and technology priorities internally and externally.
Key Responsibilities
Communications Strategy
Oversee management of PPG's communications strategy including storytelling, brand building, reputation management related to sustainability and science and technology/innovation.
Identify current and emerging industry trends and offer suggestions on best-in-class communications approaches to enhance and maintain the company's reputation as a leading paints and coatings manufacturer.
Coordinate communications efforts across multiple internal, external, earned and owned media channels. Work alongside Sr. Leader – External Communications to identify and cross-promote best practices across the organization that are driving growth and productivity within PPG and for our customers.
Act as trusted communications counsel to VP, Global Sustainability and Chief Technology Officer.
Reporting
Serve as a main point of contact for sustainability reporting, working in collaboration with corporate communications, investor relations, PPG's businesses, HR, EHS, community relations and more.
Be a subject matter expert on third-party reporting guidance including the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Sustainability Accounting and Standards Board (SASB) and Task Force for Climate Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). Work alongside internal functions and external partners as a contributor to forthcoming Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) activities, and support content analyzed by sustainability research providers including MSCI, ISS, and Sustainalytics, as well as global frameworks standards such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).
Engage and lead management of in-house or third-party contractors to support effective execution of sustainability reporting activities including data collection, messaging, tone and design.
Develop, review and edit collateral materials including presentations, case studies and other content for sustainability and innovation communications to internal and external stakeholders.
Maintain industry benchmarking, and track and implement innovative approaches to sustainability reporting, including collection and publication of metrics, proofpoints and narrative content, aligned with best practices.
Identify, prioritize, manage and promote awards and rankings to position PPG as a leader in sustainability to key stakeholders such as NGOs (non-governmental organizations), clients, prospective clients, suppliers, investors, employees and potential employees.
Content Management
Track and update key performance indicators (KPIs) relevant to internal targets and work directly with sustainability data analyst and subject matter experts (SMEs) to ensure efficient and accurate data capture.
Assist SMEs and others within the company to continuously review and improve metrics management and reporting processes.
Maintain organized and thorough tracking of sources, feedback and responses from both internal and external stakeholders, reviewing the quality and accuracy of all materials.
Build and maintain a repository of success stories, anecdotes and other information throughout the year, for promotion across internal and external channels.
Build and maintain relationships with key media and have firm understanding of media landscape across local, trade and top-tiers in order to tell PPG's sustainability and innovation stories.
Manage a network of internal and external resources create compelling, evidence-based, written and visual summaries of sustainability and innovation successes for both internal and external audiences.
Maintain close alignment with marketing communications contacts within the businesses and provide counsel on sustainability and innovation messaging/claims, ensuring legal and product stewardship alignment.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing communications or related field with at least five to seven years of communications experience working in a corporate, agency or non-profit organization.
Technical knowledge and experience in sustainability reporting and with relevant sustainability standards; Proven track record of developing and delivering qualitative and quantitative sustainability reporting would be advantageous.
Demonstrated ability to balance multiple projects, tasks and stakeholders with strong organizational and writing skills.
Proven ability to collaborate and manage relationships with internal and external partners effectively.
Must be able to collaborate effectively and influence within all levels of the organization.
