Health Alliance Plan (HAP) is seeking a motivated and talented individual to join our Actuary team as an intern for the Summer 2026 Intern Program. The program will run May 11 – August 7, with the potential to start sooner in a part time capacity. This paid internship will require full time hours availability (M-F) during the summer session dates. It will be a hybrid work format, involving a combination of remote and onsite work/events in Troy, MI (commute & housing expense reimbursement not provided).
GENERAL SUMMARY:
This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience and contribute to our mission of enhancing the health and well-being of the communities we serve. As a HAP intern, you will get exposure to various aspects of our organization and work closely with industry professionals, enabling you to develop valuable skills in the healthcare and insurance sector.
PROGRAM DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
+ Conduct comprehensive research on industry trends, healthcare policies, and emerging technologies. Analyze data and prepare reports to support strategic decision-making processes.
+ Collaborate with cross-functional teams to assist in the planning, development, and implementation of projects. Contribute innovative ideas and support the execution of initiatives aimed at improving operational efficiency and customer experience.
+ Assist in the collection, organization, and analysis of healthcare-related data. Ensure data accuracy and integrity, utilizing appropriate software tools and methodologies.
+ Provide exceptional customer service by addressing inquiries, resolving issues, and assisting with customer support activities. Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor while interacting with internal and external stakeholders.
+ Identify opportunities for process optimization and propose innovative solutions to streamline workflows and enhance productivity. Assist in the implementation of approved process improvement initiatives.
+ Create and maintain accurate documentation, including policies, procedures, and project-related materials. Generate regular reports, dashboards, and presentations to effectively communicate project progress and outcomes.
+ Collaborate effectively with colleagues across departments to support a positive and inclusive work environment. Contribute actively to team meetings, brainstorming sessions, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
Department Duties/Responsibilities:
+ Assist to pull and scrub data, perform analysis, develop studies, and put together presentations to inform key decision makers.
+ Assists with statistical and reporting functions, regulatory reporting, data testing, and research.
+ Assist with preparation of actuarial models and reconciling with financial statements.
+ Performs basic analysis of the rates and rating structures of competing programs to assist with competitive pricing decisions for various lines of business.
+ Assist with day-to-day operations, performing tasks to plan and implement projects, as well as conducting analysis and reports to assist in recommendations.
PROGRAM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
+ Currently enrolled in, or a recent graduate of, an accredited 4-year undergraduate or graduate program in a relevant field.
+ Excellent research, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
+ Proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and data analysis tools.
+ Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
+ Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, prioritize workload, and meet deadlines.
+ Demonstrated adaptability, initiative, and a desire to learn and grow.
+ Knowledge or interest in healthcare, health insurance, or managed care is a plus.
Department Education/Experience Preferences:
+ Must be pursuing a degree in actuarial sciences or related field.
+ Successful completion of one Society of Actuaries exam.
+ Knowledge of mathematical and statistical concepts with the ability to use complex mathematical calculations.
+ Ability to handle confidential or sensitive information with discretion.
