Coil Wind Operator
Work from shop packets, production or work orders, other written or verbal orders or instructions. Use micrometers to check stock, microscope, Rockwell hardness tester to ensure matching material to coil identification and checking quality. Load coils by hand or overhead hoist to payoff reel of straighteners. Observe material and check for obvious defects, imperfections, straightness and twists. Place coil on table, secure holder, thread material through straightening device. Make necessary adjustments to pressure and position of guides and rollers to achieve required results in convexity, concavity, camber, etc. Operate machine stop and go and speed controls. Adjust work and place back in stock. Maintain constant monitoring, visually checking throughout operation. Remove straightened coils to pallet, by hand or overhead electric hoist. Add separators to protect teeth. Maintain identity of coils by attaching proper tickets with actual length from machine counter and apply operator identification. Operate gas and electric tempering tanks. Start up, and adjust to specified temperatures and time cycles for particular types and sizes of stock according to available chart. Load coils on racks, add spacers and using overhead hoist, place in tank. Remove tempered coils with hoist and stack on skids with spacers. Dip designated coils in oil and place to drip dry. Burn out tempering tanks to established schedule and procedure. Operate electric welder to splice coil materials. Cut coils at appropriate location and place in jaws of welder. Select proper setting, adjust air pressure, tension and flash guard and activate welder, adjust annealing operation, remove from jaws, grind and hand file weld. Change and dress grinding wheel as required. Reinstall in jaws and perform final annealing process. Determining proper application by visual inspection. Clean and maintain welder, lubricate and replace guides as required. Perform daily calculations for reprioritization. Pick up shop orders from coil winders and enter required data into computer terminal. Conduct monthly inventory of work in process, calculating quantity of material per skid and total. Operate computer terminal keyboard to enter other data as required. Some operators calibrate, adjust or repair gauges and precision measuring instruments used on the job. Perform routine or minor maintenance duties such as removal and replacement of straightening fixtures, rolls, guides, etc. Operate electric lift truck to move skids of material in and about the work area. Detect and report faulty equipment, machinery or defective material, other unusual situations or problems to the supervisor. Maintain equipment and work area, including under temper tanks, in a clean and orderly condition. Observe and obey all safety rules, regulations and practices and employ all safety equipment and devices.
