Clinical Veterinarian

Job Summary:

Serve as Site Lead Veterinarian and leader of the animal welfare team. To provide veterinary health care for laboratory animals, monitor animal health and welfare, and give advice regarding the care and maintenance of laboratory animals in compliance with applicable animal welfare regulations, provide training for technicians and help maintain facilities for AAALAC accreditation.

Essential Job Duties: 

Lead the local animal welfare team. 

Provide laboratory animal medical and surgical care by examination, treatment and advice to ensure adequate and humane veterinary support. 

Manages/leads client visits related to animal welfare/veterinary care.

Ensure that company policies and practices regarding animal care and welfare are in compliance with relevant regulations.

Assist in training of staff on general animal health and welfare and common veterinary procedures including, where applicable, annual externship program.

Serve on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) or Ethical Review Panel (ERP), where appropriate, as alternate member, and conduct veterinary review of IACUC protocol submissions under supervision.

Perform physical examinations of laboratory animals as indicated in protocols and SOP.

Perform ophthalmic or other veterinary examinations on laboratory animals as indicated in protocols and SOP (expected within 6 months of external hire).

Report all animal care concerns and become involved in the resolution and appropriate corrective action, when necessary.

Participate in client conference calls and visits.

Manage projects and complex cases independently.

Travel Requirements: Yes (Regional)

% of time: 10%

% of the above that requires overnight stay: 10%

Travel is primarily to where: suppliers, conferences, other Labcorp sites

Experience:

Minimum Required:

3 years of veterinary clinical experience or 2 years of experience in Laboratory Animal Medicine.

Knowledge of small and large animals used in research.

Must be able to work in a laboratory setting with laboratory animals.

Education/Qualifications

Bachelor or Master in veterinary medicine and Chinese veterinary certificate, or equivalent

Mastery of clinical medicine in general veterinary practice: manage clinical cases unique to drug R&D with coaching.

Working knowledge of applicable animal welfare regulatory requirements/standards in R& D: may require supervisor guidance on interpretation

Advise on study associated treatment plans: assist

Provision of theoretical and practical training on laboratory animal medicine and science: provide training in common veterinary procedures encountered in general practice

Effectively address quality issues including during conference calls with and visits of customers: address common/minor issues under supervision; assist with management of customer concerns during conference calls and/or visits

Contributions to IACUC/ERP: conducting veterinary reviews of some IACUC study protocols under supervision

Procedures that must be performed by a veterinarian per study protocol at site: some common/minor

Team projects; influential leadership across multiple local/regional teams: demonstrated ability to lead projects to timely delivery drawing on general practice knowledge

Working Conditions:

Mandatory immunizations and screening as required.

May be in contact with potentially hazardous substances.

Work may require wearing protective clothing, visors or respirator for long periods.

Special Factors:

Overtime and weekend work as required.
