The Clinical Research Specialist is responsible for obtaining patient blood and tumor specimens from operating rooms at UPMC Shadyside, UPMC Children’s Hospital, and other sites, coordinating with collaborators, and transporting specimens to their designated locations. They identify eligible subjects through electronic health records and the Musculoskeletal Oncology Tumor Registry (MOTR), inform patients of their eligibility before and after surgery, and obtain informed consent either in person or through recruitment mailings and follow-up calls. The specialist abstracts clinical data from consented subjects, coordinates multiple research studies, and ensures appropriate patient enrollment. They enter and manage clinical data using eLabJournal, Excel, and SPSS, oversee registry maintenance including consent and data forms, and perform regular data quality checks. Additionally, they support faculty, medical students, residents, and fellows conducting research within the Musculoskeletal Oncology Laboratory and assist with expanding projects as new funding sources and collaborations emerge.
