Clinical Nurse Specialist

Summary

The Clinical Nurse Specialist is an Advance Practice Nurse with a Masters or doctoral degree in nursing and specialty certification, who performs as an independent and interdependent member of the healthcare team in managing the care of patients. Provides direct patient care to defined patient population and families based on the needs of the individuals according to areas of expertise to promote health and improve quality of life. These activities may include but not limited to assessing, diagnosing, planning, and intervening which may include prescribing pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment of health problems. CNSs are nursing leaders responsible for providing expertise in the practice of nursing to produce quality outcomes, promote evidence-based practice and demonstrate cost-effective practices via collaboration with the patient, nursing personnel, physicians and all applicable stakeholders.

Education

Must have an MSN from an accredited Clinical Nurse Specialist program. Acceptable accrediting agencies are Commission on Collegiate Education in Nursing (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA).

Licensure/Certification

RN license by Indiana State Board of Nursing. Current CPR certification. Certification in Advance Practice required when eligible. Certification in specialty area preferred: or must obtain within 1 year of employment. Where applicable to specialty practice, prescriptive authority and DEA licensure may be required.

Experience

Two years active clinical nursing experience in Emergency Department required. This may include supervised clinical experience obtained during the graduate program.
