Stony Brook University: Health Sciences: Renaissance School of Medicine: Pathology **Description** The Department of Pathology at Stony Brook University’s Renaissance School of Medicine (RSOM) is seeking applications for a clinical pathology faculty member at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level (Clinician Educator track) to provide laboratory director oversight for the clinical microbiology laboratory section of the Stony Brook University Hospital’s Department of Laboratories. The clinical microbiology laboratory provides comprehensive diagnostic services to Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH) and Stony Brook Children’s Hospital on a shared campus of Long Island’s premier academic medical center. The clinical microbiology section director provides administrative oversight for testing performed in bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, parasitology, and virology (molecular infectious disease), directing a staff of ~30 FTE. This position provides hospital-wide consultations in coordination with adult and pediatric Infectious Disease divisions and Stony Brook Medicine’s Healthcare Epidemiology Department. The Director of the Clinical Microbiology laboratory ensures regulatory compliance with New York State Department of Health’s Clinical Laboratory Evaluation Program certification and accreditation from the College of American Pathologists, including assay validations and verifications and the evaluation and implementation of emerging testing technologies and automation platforms. This high-visibility position provides meaningful leadership in antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention and control, and clinical operational efficiency. In addition, this position will have significant influence in the design and operational policies supporting SBUH’s Special Pathogen Treatment Center to identify, isolate and treat patients with suspected high-consequence infectious agents. As a member of the Department of Pathology’s Clinical Pathology faculty, the clinical microbiology section director also contributes to the education and scholarship missions of the RSOM. Abundant teaching opportunities exist for clinical residents and fellows alongside the medical students at the RSOM and students of Stony Brook’s School of Health Professions. The successful candidate will join a strong and experienced Pathology Department faculty, with opportunities for collaborations in basic and translational science, including investigators from the Departments of Medicine (Infectious Disease), Microbiology, and Infection Prevention and Control exploring existing and novel tick-borne diseases. Translational opportunities exist in harmonizing testing platforms and services, application of modern algorithms in identification and infection control, and development of novel technologies and assays to meet the challenges of emerging public health pathogens. Intramural funds are available to support an array of investigator-initiated projects and multidisciplinary collaborations. Advancement in this position will also involve service as an active member for working groups and committees spanning the broad mission of an academic medical center at the institutional, New York state, and national professional organization levels.
