The Educator is a registered professional nurse who functions under the direction of the Director, Education. This nurse possesses advanced clinical expertise and utilizes this expertise to support learning and the delivery of safe, age appropriate, and culturally aware patient care.The Educator demonstrates knowledge of educational theories, methods of delivery, and the ability to develop and facilitate relevant and effective education for the adult learner. The Educator is a resource to all levels of staff and is responsible for assessing learning needs, planning activities and developing curriculum to address identified needs, and collecting and analyzing data to evaluate education to ensure positive outcomes. The Educator promotes quality, evidence-based practice, and supports nursing research. Communicates and collaborates with physicians and other members of the health team to provide consistent quality care for patients with wounds. Assists patients with wound healing modalities to achieve the level of independent functioning possible. Complies with the hospital and nursing philosophy and standards while performing job duties and responsibilities. Provides nursing care to patients with fistulae, tubes, dermal wounds, and incontinence. *Essential Functions:* Education Specialist: Consults with and keeps Director of Education informed of activities, needs and problems related to patient education. Conducts learning needs assessments for target population to determine educational priorities. Plans, designs, and implements course curriculum utilizing evidence-based nursing science. Evaluates curriculum and course offerings to determine efficacy. Designs, delivers, and assesses learning activities and curriculums related to clinical competencies, departmental/organizational policies, regulatory requirements, and the use of clinical information technologies. Promotes delivery of safe patient care through development of clinical staff. Serves as clinical resource to nursing staff, leadership, and medical staff. Serves as a consultant/mentor for staff in areas of program development, clinical practice, and professional development. Engages staff in continual performance improvement and learning. Maintains current instructor status and teaches BLS, ACLS, PALS or other as required. Uses variety of educational theories and teaching methods to achieve optimal outcomes. Collaborates with other organization educators to align programming and methods. Collaborates with nurse managers and staff to assess the learning needs and competencies of staff. Completes and submits documents as required for nursing continuing education. Initiates and promotes performance improvement activities designed to promote quality staff development programming. Collaborates with Department Managers/Directors to enhance retention and competence of staff. Participates in the development, coordination, and delivery of new staff orientation and education activities. Ensures new hires are properly on-boarded. Serves as professional role model within nursing. Serves as mentor in the development of peers and staff. Promotes positive learning environment for staff and students. Promotes professional nursing practice through shared governance, evidence-based practice and ethical accountability. Promotes participation in professional organizations for self and others. Manages projects as assigned from design through implementation and evaluation. Maintains current knowledge of nursing practice, evidence base for nursing science, and regulatory agency/body standards. Maintains accountability for professional growth and development including continuing and academic nursing education and certification. Reviews and selects outside trainers, course materials, audiovisual aids and exercises for indicated programs. Recruits medical center staff with specific expertise to conduct training sessions. Develops courses and teaches or co-trains in specific subjects. Evaluates trends in adult education and training needs, implementing changes to continually improve the services provided. Facilitates Trumont Residency program locally for new graduate nurses. Wound Care Nurse: Follows patients identified to be at moderate to high risk for skin breakdown and patients with complex wound management needs. Collaborates with medical teammates to identify care measures to prevent and treat pressure ulcers and complex wounds and fistulae. Works in concert with the medical staff in the use and application of clinical devices/support surfaces for prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers. Develops and maintains evidence based practice guidelines for care of the ostomy and skin care patients. Answers telephone calls and assists staff. Maintains confidentiality. *Minimum Education:*Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required. Master's Degree in Nursing preferred. WTA-C within 1 year. *Required Skills:*Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
